Reading that thread I am not surprised at all by the lack of response from HP regarding this issue.

HP/Compaq/Digital/Tandem/yada-yada-yada is a hardware company [i know this first hand]; they're only doing what they need/feel is required to push iron. that said I wouldn't expect them to make software improvements, certainly not on a platform they can't control. what I am stunned about is m/s isn't getting any grief for not providing the s/w update(s) directly; it is after all theirs. So in the "you take it, I got it" marriage between these two, I think looking forward you can only expect them to do what it's their best interests; customers are a by-product towards their future endeavors. So while I was happily looking forward towards buying a 5555/GPS and forego [sic?] landscape/WPA/new-IE, I think I'll opt instead for a 4700, knowing the s/w it comes with is the s/w it'll stay with. The marriage model between these two is very similar on the PC space but with perhaps significantly higher margins, and less risk. Perhaps in the future a linux alternative to m/s on iPAQ would accomodate existing customers, allowing them to control their own destiny. If a sufficient linux s/w market developed, then perhaps others would join in. I think this is what they are expecting [putting our money where our mouths are] but time will tell how this really plays out.

HP says
"HP’s goal is to maintain a quality product release and provide resolutions to issues on existing ROM images while releasing new iPAQ products with the latest offerings from Microsoft." This translates to we will give you fixes for the dodgy software implementations we sold you in the first place!! But..... If you want new software (OS) then you have to buy our new hardware!! This equates to having to update your PC everytime microsoft do a second edition (to fix problems with the original release!) or XP gets updates to longhorn! If M$ did proper testing and followed the correct software development life cycle they wouldnt need to keep releasing service packs and 2nd edition, its our rom/hard drive space m$ is using up, I think it is wrong for m$ to use this statergy of using end users as beta testers to iron out there bugs! perhaps its time to have a go at M$ and maybe change OS's (linux is so much better anyway (thats just my personal opinion though)

Agreed that Microsoft has a hand in this... but Hp still needs to tweak the software for their own devices... and it seems they are unwilling to spend the resources to do this for their existing user base.
They are more intent on selling you a new device... I guess Carley needs another plane...
