2) Where can I find more themes/skins? I tried using a picture as a background wallpaper (set it up in the today setting) but the result is a very faint version of the pic... like it is frosted or the color has faded... is this normal?
3) I am really used to viewing my contacts list sorted by first name but this doesn't seem to be supported in the default contact app. Is there a plug-in or program that I can install that can enable this?

Pseudo - welcome to the site - hope you are enjoting your new machine.
1) You need to be careful just copying programmes over to your SD card - for a lot of them this is fine, but if they create registry items which point at the original position you are creating problems further down the line.
A better method is when you are installing on your PC a box will pop-up asking if you want to install to the default directory - answer no - and another box will pop-up which will allow you install onto the SD card. (if you haven't installed too many apps - I would be tempted to unistall and re-install them). The only warning about this is that "Today screen plug-ins" are usually better of being installed in the default main memory (so that they can be called quickly on start-up).
2) There are a large number of websites to do with themes perform a search on this site and you will get a large number of hits.
3) There are a number of programmes that do this (and a lot more) such as Pocket Informant and Agenda Fusion. These may be overkill and you can get programmes which appear with all you information on the today screen - such as PocketBreeze - PB also comes with a plug-in (yes a plug-in to a plug-in!) called ContactBreeze which will allow you to view your contacts any way that you want.
As you are new to PPC's I recommed that you read the
tutorials which are linked on the main page of this site - and especially the one called
What can I do with my iPaq.
Hope this all helps.
