issues with templates
I have some problems with using templates in Notes: the same problems on both the rz1710 and 1930. (rz1710 = Windows Mobile 2003 SE v4.21.1088 build 14132, 1930 = Pocket PC v 4.20.1081 build 13100). Both are ActiveSync'ed to the same home PC (W98SE)
Only supplied Note templates seem to work: that is, if I open, modify and close any of Meeting Notes, Memo, Phone Memo or To Do then I get Meeting Notes (1) (for example) which I can move or rename to another folder. If I put another note in the "Templates" folder, my understanding is that it should work the same way, but it doesn't. So, if I open a note I have put there, then modify and save it, it over-writes the existing note, supposedly a "template". I don't get (for example) New Note (1). Also, when viewing from "All Folders" I can see the new notes I have put in Templates, but not the supplied note templates. This implies to me that templates are somehow flagged other than just by being in that folder. Interestingly, File Explorer does not show the supplied notes in the Templates Folder, just the new ones. That seems a bit odd, too, but I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the problem. Any ideas? Michael

Hi Michael- welcome to the site
I have never heard of note templates - do you have a link to where you read about them? (Sorry that isn't much help - yet)

Hi Rob, thanks for the welcome!
On the PPC, tap Start>Help>Find then enter "template" and tap Go. You'll find "Create a template" and "Create a note by using a template" The gist of it appears to be that if you open and modify any note in the Templates folder, you don't replace the original as youwould in any other folder, but get a new note called "filename (1)" (where "filename" = the name of the "template"). The trouble is that is seems to work only for the supplied templates as in my original post. It doesn't seem to work for files I have put there. I don't know if the issues are the same in Pocket Word: I haven't got that far yet! Michael

I have just had another play with it and...
- the supplied template "Memo" saves, "not as Memo (1)" but as "Memorandum" (which is the first line, from which notes take their name unless you rename them) and if you create another note from the "Memo" template then you get "Memorandum (1)". Renaming my new templates, though, doesn't help, and in any case, all the other supplied templates have "normal" (ie same as first line of text) names. So it isn't due to a trick of filenames. - I can't help wondering about filename extensions on the PPC: is there a way to view them? I suspect that the solution to this lies in some property of the files other than just their location. Otherwise, why can't I see them with File Explorer? - with Pocket Word the same things occur Michael

Thanks, Rob.
I've had a look with Total Commander (thanks for the link!) and the extensions are the same: the notes are all .pwi files, the Word docs are all .psw. So it isn't the file extensions. I shall have to give up. I hate that ;-( Here's another Notes question, if you like: how do you change the font or apply text formatting (eg bold)? The supplied note templates have bold fonts in the first lines: Meeting Notes, Memo, Phone Memo, To Do. Yet there isn't an option in Notes to format text, so how did they do that? What's more, sometimes within a note I am making, the font size changes and I can't figure out why, or how to alter it. The same occurs on the h1930 and rz1710. Michael

I've been playing around with the templates myself, due to a new program I've installed onto my 2215. I understand what you are talking about with the templates. I myself copied all of my templates and put them in a safe place until I had this thing figured out.
If you take a look at the properties of the notes or word documents in the templates folder you'll find that they are checked as read only and hidden files. This is to prevent you from deleting or coping over them. This is how they become renamed as *1, so they are not over writin. Hope this helps you to understand the Templates......

A new note -
To do the formating, take a look at the word doc asocciated with the note. The note is done in word then copied to the notes document.

Total Commander is what I use to change the properties of the files. Yes you have to copy and paste in a new note with the templates.
I'm using the programe from inesoft (CalcNote) which uses the template folder, but when you open a template and alter it you have to copy and paste in new and name it in order to save it. You understand??? I'm not very good at explaning in typing............. ![]()

It's a bit cumbersome having to go to a bit of third-party software to edit the properties and make things work as designed, isn't it. You'd think it would work as promised. Michael

Thats right........
Thats why I use CalcNote, I open the template copy open new, paste then fill it in and rename. it saves it in the same template folder, but its not hidden and you can edit and save the new note.
