Hey there fellow Axim users! I just successfully updated to A05 after my 10th try or so and have come up with a theory. I tried it several times with the battery trick as well as several other tricks and it never worked. Then I just kept trying it over and over again. Evenutally it worked. I have come up with 2 theories after this.
1) (More likely) The installer program is random. You just have to keep trying it over and over and it will eventually work. 2) (Less Likely) I really don't think this had anything to do with it but I thought I'd post it just in case. The last time when I tried it and it worked, I set the processor speed on the Axim to power save mode (200MHz). This may have something to do with it, but I doubt it. My point is bassically to keep on trying and you may eventually see results. Let me know! -Ranma

Hey! You stole my theory!
You can view it here: I'm really glad to hear that it worked for you. I can't wait to try mine tomorrow. Hopefully, we're on to something here. I'm certainly willing to split the fame and fortune derived from this with you. ![]()

OK. Here is the deal. The theory is impossible to test with the current ROM loader. Before loading the new ROM image, the loader forces a hard reset, which resets the CPU setting to automatic.
Anyway, mine didn't work. I even tried putting my unit in the freezer for 30 minutes first in order to cool it down and increase memory performance. (And thats strike three, and he's out...)

See I'm almost positive that my first theory was correct. It's just random. I doubt there's really much you can do. You most likely just have to keep trying and trying and it will eventually work. Although this explanation is kind of annyoing, it seems to be the most likely. Anyone let me know if something else turns up.

Ranma,
Did you do a ROM backup each time, or did you skip it? I skipped it after I backed it up the first time. Also, did you leave any expansion cards in or out? Thanks.

Left the expansion cards in and only did the ROM backup once. I honestly think you just have to keep trying. I really didn't do anything special. After it failed like 5 times I stopped taking out the batteries and switching computers and taking out expansion cards ect... ect... Instead I just kept running the install program over and over (once in a while I would re-unzip the package). Just keep trying and best of luck IridiumFlash. Believe me - I know how frustrated you are and so do several others.

When it didn't work for me I did happen to have the dummy SD card in the slot. When the update worked, I had removed it along with trying the battery trick.
It might be that you really have to keep on trying until it works. Although some might have to try many times and that sucks.

Uh... but the dummy SD card is just that - a dummy card. It's just a chunk of plastic the size and shape of an SD card. So how can that make a difference?
The problem with trying it over and over 'until it works' is that for some people, not only does it not ever work, it leaves the Axim in an unusuable state.
