Moderators better check this one....re downloaded WM2003 fix
Hi,
I have had my AXIM with WM2003 for several weeks now, and frankly I am sick of waiting for the patch, its rubbish, I could have bought another brand and be fine now.
So the point of my question, its not rocket science to find the originally released patch for WM2003 via various search engines online, as Ive got an Australian Axim and this patch was released on the US web site, would I be safe in just using this one?
I know this raises all sorts of questions about sources of the files legality and so on, but Im over it, Ive paid and have been ripped off, I demand the fix!
OK I understand the risk, it probably isnt worth. Just pissed off with it all. We have been more than patient.
Still, Im intrigued, in theory is there anything different between the Axim in the US or in Australia?
Slight region differences perhaps?
btw I have to ask, what on earth inspired you to create a bubble wrap simulator for the PPC?? :)
We understand your frustrations xframe, most
of us are in the same boat.
RE: Bubblewrap. A few people
were in my department at work over a break
and one started poppin some bubbles, and
I told him he was wasting bubblewrap.. and
well basically the rest is history.. :-)

Oh, and im not sure on differences, all I know is
first hand, a few people I talk to have tried the upgrade
even from A04 - A05 and some have failed... too me
the risk just does not seem worth it

There is no official way of doing the NON-US to US upgrade.
What the hackers did was to change the country settings on the Axim to all US settings, make the backup, then use the backup header to patch the update. Then there are no warnings about country, language etc.

I did not have any problems doing the NON-US to US upgrade and I certainly did not hack anything.
All I did was change the regional settings on my Axim to US before starting the upgrade.
I own a brand new Axim which was originally equipped with Windows Mobile 2003 (German ROM version A00). Since I was TIRED of waiting for the fix I decided to take the plunge and go ahead and install the US patch. Installation went smoothly, and now I've got a US Axim which runs as fast as it should have in the first place.
Benchmarks are very close to the 2210. Also my 1 gig microdrive performs remarkably well.
Once I receive the German patch I can always go back and install it. I *did' save the original ROM, just to make sure.
JME, I think the point is that unless it's the official release from Dell, you have no way of knowing whether the instructions are 'bad' or 'good'. Using the upgrade means potentially frying your Axim. Even if it's only one in a 1000, I don't want to be that 1.
Theoretically, the new version on CD should ship within two weeks (possibly one now) and Cdn$45 is not an unreasonable price.
Better, if THAT version toasts my Ax, I can legitimately call Dell and say 'FIX IT OR REPLACE IT', since I used a legal copy and their instructions. If you use a hacked version and it fries your Ax, you'll be out the price of a replacement.
So.. unless you're prepared to replace any Ax left fried by following your instructions, I suggest you take it elsewhere.

If the correct instructions are used... (like the ones developed by a few of us) then the percentage is 100% sucess. Tee only risk is the same that one runs when flashing anything from Dell to the PDA. Indeed, it is probably safer than what one might get from Dell.
