Graffiti Area Default Choice -- How To question

I am a recent switch from a Palm T3 to the Ipaq HX2755, so please forgive me in advance if some of the terms I use are slightly off.

On to the question at hand.

By default, the graffiti area is set to the "soft keyboard" mode. Going through the control panel (Settings / Input)to switch this is fine. However (comma) it doesn't stick.

What I *want* to always have as primary choice, is the "Letter Recognizer".

So far, I've gotten hints that this would be inclusive of a Registry Hack on the handheld. (Huh? How do you even get in there to edit the Registry. Not like you can go "Start / Run / RegEdit" to bring it up)

So what am I missing?

You need one of 3 things:

1. Edit the registry yourself(very dangerous if you don't know what you're doing)
2. Registry editor (ie Reg King)
3. A program like Tweaks2k2 that contains preset hacks and is the safest way to tweak. I use Tweaks to change my input method to Letter Recognizer. There is a link in MyPDA to the left. The program is very inexpensive and contains tonnes of awesome tweaks.

Let us know how you make out.

I believe you only need to tap the arrow key to the right of the keyboard symbol to set your default input choice. I only use the keyboard and don't switch back and forth, so someone else here may be able to enlighten you further.

Regking can also do this.

This just temporarily changes the input method. In order for it to be a default a reg hack needs to be done.

I manually did the registry entry using Resco Explorer. It works great. Just double-check your typing before saving the change. Or use RegKing, etc.

Wasn't there a old carry over from past OS'es that doesn't allow Handwriting recognition (I fogot the real name - I have been using Calligrapher) as the default SIP?

Yep - but this registry Tweak (BE CAREFUL!) allows you to do it (if you have an English ROM):

http://www.phm.lu/PocketPC/RegTweaks/Tweak.asp?ref=13

I agree with the users above that the safest way to do it is by using Teaks2k2, RegEdit or similar - rather than using the manual tweak I have given above.
Regards

Odd, i just tried this on my 3115,
Correct it does forget the setting from the main settings,
but if reselected once at notes or other where keyboard is used, i select it again an it stays there.

Does it stay there after a soft reset?

It shouldn't. Probably Warraven didn't account for a soft reset.

I went out and purchased TWEAKS2k2 over the weekend. Made the modification that way. Unfortuantely, as skilled as I am with the Desktop Windows, I don't feel comfortable doing the same kinds of thigns with the handheld. Though I am slowly experimenting and learning as I go.

Thanks everyone for your input on this. You've been a huge help!

IT is a great programme - you won't be disappointed

Although I don't mind 'playing' with the registry (I have Sprite perform a full back-up each day at 5:30am so I can restore easily) I still use Tweaks as it is just plain easier

In SKTools, you can do the same thing - also it can disable the ones you don't want to see. For example, mine only has block recognizer, keyboard, and accesspanel listed.
