Opening a word doc via email attachment (directly, without a conversion) is something I can see as you describe, ... all of the funny symbols.
However, if you're getting this issue also after dropping a word document via ActiveSync, then you've got a whole 'nuther ball game goin' on. Something is pooched, adn I've not heard of THIS one before. I'm running through the theory's of how things work. Some questions: - Soft Reset: Have you tried this yet? Sometimes, it helps. It's the CTRL ALT DEL of the PPC world. Only windows would rely on something like this this much, but there you are. Give this a shot. THEN retry the conversion via ActiveSync. (Note: For troubleshooting purposes, lets' focus on the ActiveSync conversion first. Then we'll branch out for the other issue that you're having. One problem at a time). - Describe the Word Document that you're converting, please. Does it have a lot of tables, fancy fonts, or other high speed Windows 2003 formatting schtick? - Uninstall and reinstall ActiveSync. There have been times when it's known to have gone corrupt. It could also just be a corrupt user profile within ActiveSync, but ... /shrug/ ... I don't know how to identify that from a corrupt AS program itself. therefore, one shot, one kill. Kill activesync, reboot your computer, reinstall. Then sync your handheld after that. (One note for you: Before your "First" sync after that reinstall, make SURE, and I mean ABSOLUTELY sure that you do a full system backup first. Just in case that damn sync tries to wipe your contacts, calendar points, etc. You're warned! :-) I can't help the crap programming that Microsoft does. ) Try this out, and let us k,now how it goes?

Still issues
Hi Derekweb
Have tried soft reset, no change but something is definately wrong, your pointers are suggesting activesync. I have removed 3.8, reboot and reinstalled 3.7.1 which came with my 4150, now whichever ipaq I use 4700 or 4150 the documents come out as symbols, trouble is I can't remeber If 4150 ever read word doc's properly. However far too much of a coincidence for two machines to have the same mysterious problem. Its got to be activesync's conversion I've downloaded 3.8 off microsoft, still the same!!! Thanks for your help so far but any more ideas? Maccaa ![]()

Hi Sugar_cube
Doc opens fine on PC, tried a few docs, all basic letters nothing fancy. Just put on active sync 4.0, still no joy. Also installed reco...something and document views fine on PDA but its a little more long winded than standard. I have even checked activesyncs conversion settings and they seem fine. Maccaa

OK - the next question to ask is:
What font are the docs written in, & are those fonts installed on your PPC? (If Windows can't find the font then it will 'choose' one, even if it's the wrong one).

I would suggest highlighting the whole document of symbols and changing the font [edit - Format], this works for me.
I agree this should not be the case when opening a document placed via activesync.

Getting there
Sugar_Cube, Richwoodgate,
Think we are getting to the crux of the matter! The origional letters were in times new roman, When I "select all and then format"in a PPC available format I can now read that doc. Is there a way that you know to add more fonts to pocket word, get the activesync conversion right, or am I stuck with "select all then format". Thanks guys for your help so far Cheers Maccaa P.S. The only font options I have(on ppc) are Tahoma, gpcode and courier new
