The auto cancellation of orders is especially troublesome to me, it's almost as though Dell is trying to nudge people out of the idea of getting an upgrade to begin with.
I haven't gotten one of these emails yet, but I think that it seems like all of a sudden the whole upgrade scene has been knocked down a few notches on Dell's priority meter. I'd be curious to see what this entails for A04 users seeking a patch.
Maybe Dell is diverting resources to gear up for the release of the Axim X3 (rumors stated it would be coming out later this year)?
I would sincerely hope that with this additional delay I will be getting version A06 or something. The additional bugs that would likely be fixed in the next revision are probably worth the wait.
Thought I might add a link to an article on Brighthand that further supports the basis of this thread, but doesn't really offer any additional insight...

I just got my email today, kind of short notice, gives me a day to decide if I want to keep playing their "wait and see if we are really going to ship this" game. Yes I will probably tell them that I will wait, but like others here I'm getting a little fed up with the delays. Especially since they are shipping new Ax's with 2003 on them that from all reports seem to be working fine. Mine is currently working ok with 2002 (not counting the occasional soft reset, but then again it is Windows) but it is something we were promised and it seems like our current Axims will be obselete before we get the upgrade.

Takes them a while to upgrade the status on the website. I have ordered things from dell before, had it in my hand and the website still said shipping on a date in the future. If the Oct 1 date is true, your status will change at some point.

It was brought to you indirectly by the numbers 106 and 128, and the letters D, E, and L. :D

I have not received an e-mail from Dell. I tried to access my order status page and there is nothing there. I guess they are updating again but no email.
Go figure!!

One. At the moment - we're in exactly the same situation as the e740 owners with one difference: they KNOW they aren't getting an upgrade, we still have hope. Worse, the A/P people ARE (or maybe were.. it's hard to say) in the exact same position since they were told they would never get the upgrade.
Tangibly though, these two situations are essentially identical until Dell ships something. Well, almost - our situation will be worse if Dell decides not to ship at all because we had hope it would ship. The e740 owners have already passed through that phase into the 'let's bomb them' phase. :)
Two. Dell is not the cheapest upgrade. Most companies are charging around US$30 for it or less. I'm sure there are a few charging more, but Dell's price isn't neither a bargain nor a ripoff. And as I noted elsewhere, most of us have no problems paying the $30 if Dell would just ship the dang product already.
|
I agree with most of your post, but I thought that the UK users were already getting their upgrade CDs (like HappyCheesecake).
The upgrade will be possible even if Dell doesn't ship it. (and I am posting NO more about that here.) :)
The poor e740 users will not have it unless Toshiba changes their minds or if the user experimentation is sucessful.

I think on Brighthand. People were complaining that Toshiba was charging a shipping and handling fee of like $16 (and they were saying it was a free upgrade).
On second thought, I think that was for the HP... not the Toshiba. Anyway, one of them was supposed to be a free upgrade but I guess that would be comparable to Axim owners that are due a free upgrade according to their purchase date.
I think I have it straight now... never mind. :D

If I cared I'd search PPCThoughts, but it doesn't matter. We are stuck with whatever Dell wants to sell us. I hope they throw in a couple programs on the disk for our trouble.

I really don't know what bugs... WM2003 worked just fine for me. I had one minor sound issue that will probably be resolved when developers update their programs (a pure guess by me) and a DB problem that is fixed automatically by my registered version of PocketPlus.
I really could not find any glaring holes in WM2003 on my Axim. I actually really liked it.

From bargainpda.com:
HP-Compaq 1910 3600 3700 3800 3900 5400
Upgradable? No No No Yes Yes Yes
I can already hear the howls of 1910 users. Sorry, folks, but HP is not producing a 1910 upgrade, nor do they have any plans to. Their stated reason was that 1910 users are not the kind of enterprise users who would demand--and, though it was not said, pay for--an upgrade. The elderly 3600 and 3700 models are no surprise--there likely aren't enough units still in high-end use to make releasing an upgrade profitable. Just as unsurprisingly, all of HPQ's recent high-end models will be able to run the new OS, including the iPaq 5400, 3900, and 3800 series. One catch is that while the upgrade packages for the 3900 and 5400 series will be available almost immediately, the 3800 upgrade will not be out until October. There are two ways to look at this--either the older StrongARM processor in the 3800s has delayed the build of 2003 for that machine, or HP is unsubtly trying to get enterprise users to buy a new PocketPC.
HPQ will offer it's upgrades for $30.
Toshiba e310 e330 e740 e750
Upgradable? No No No Yes
Toshiba alone of the major PocketPC manufacturers has opted to upgrade only their highest-end unit. No doubt there will be some e740 users who are very put out about this, but given Toshiba's emphasis on it's new models, it's hardly a shock. In addition to offering an upgrade to WM2003 for the e750, Toshiba will also be including WM'03 on newly shipped e750s, as well as the new e350 models.
The price of the e750 series upgrade varies depending on when you bought it. For those who purchased their e750 since May 23rd, the upgrade cost is $16 (ostensibly for 'shipping and handling' on a 'free' upgrade). This offer runs through September 23rd of this year, but with Toshiba filtering pre-upgraded e750s into the market, new buyers are essentially playing a craps shoot, with a $16 penalty for losing. Bad move on Toshiba's part, as this may scare off potential buyers. For those who bought the e750 before May 23rd, 2003, the upgrade price will be $50, which includes 'shipping and handling'. Again, possibly a mistake, considering that their competitors are offering their upgrades for almost half as much.
Dell Axim X5 Basic Axim X5 Advanced
Upgradable? Yes Yes
Some Axim users should be happy here, as both of Dell's PPCs are upgradable. As with the Axims themselves, Dell will be selling these direct by web and phone.
The X5 upgrade package--which includes a one month free trial of PocketPC anti-virus software, don't ask me why--will be selling for $30.
Your welcome :D

Thanks. That pretty much clears it up.
My work days out in the hot, hot sun end on Wednesday so maybe my brain cells will begin to function again! :crooked:

For anyone who may have missed it there seems to be some info on the main page now concerning all of this.
It sounds like Dell has adopted the "it's ready when it's ready" approach towards all of this (not unlike another company I know of and a game called Duke Forever) as there is no ship date.
They are changing the interface to the installer (which to me sounds like they pulled the CDs again, this time to redo the installer with probably some sort of copy protection, since I don't think that they would pull it at this point for the sake of asthetics).
I would also assume now that we will be getting the next ROM revision but that is never explicly stated.
At this point, since my Axim works fine with PPC 2002 this isn't a big deal I suppose. Though the delays are simply getting a bit ridiculous now. I really feel sorry for those who have flawed WM2003 A04 units who haven't been able to patch.
I think that Dell needs to give its customer support some serious thought. I could attribute all of this to being inexperience in the PPC market since it is their first product if it wasn't for the fact that it isn't an isolated incident, but rather part of a much larger pattern of flaky tech support.
If I do get the Oct 1 email I'm not so sure I'll stick with the upgrade anymore, I may just wait and when the upgrade finally does come out, re-evaluate whether or not it's worth the money.

If I had the A04 ROM I would be REALLY pissed at Dell right about now.
