Clicking noise at start up after upgrading
I have noticed that since upgrading to 2003 mobile (A05) there is a audible clicking noise generated when I power on the machine. This did not occur with 2002.The volume of noise is not affected by volume control - I also have recording level switched off.As anyone else experienced similar condition ?

Further to above post - I have noticed the clicking noise only occurs when processor performance is set to maximum in power settings - when set to auto there is no clicking noise - I will try other settings later.

I noticed the noise when resetting (hard or soft). I also noticed the absence of the audio chime that used to play in PPC2002 after a reset...

Could possibly be some high frequency noise generated by the CPU is passing through the speaker.

Hmm, I'll have a play with mine.
my Axim shipped with WM2K3, wonder if it only affects upgrades or what.
*sets Axim to Max Performance and Soft Resets*
hmmm, at what point does it do this noise? mine made a slight kinda noise way towards the end of the bootup, after a softreset. was like, 2 seconds away from when the screen appeared.
doesnt make any clicking noise at all, when turned on, after being turned off.
had sound on, and everything.. Just in case.
boothy, have you Overclocked your Maximum Performance Setting, or not? I assume not as it affects JmE as well.
strange how it makes the noise after Hard Resetting as well.
Ok. just played around a bit more, makes a noise STRAIGHT AWAY after you turn it on... really quite immediately.
*checks to see if it makes the same noise, on "Auto" not Max Perf..*
hmm, yeah.. does when soft resetting. didnt when powering up.

Hi snellgrove
No I have not overclocked software
The `clicking` or `ticking`noise eminates immediately after pressing power button. As stated by earlier post it does sound like some interferance picked up by speaker prior to sound drivers kicking in.The upgrade must have changed timing or firmware change must have subtlely affected control - I am only awell experieced amatuer at these things and only guessing ! The noise definately did not occur with previous a03 rom (2002)

That is exactly what mine does. I assume Dell or M$ messed up the chime WAV that was played there in PPC2002. It at the moment PPC2002 played a chime when resetting.
Do you hear a chime when you reset or no?

No, I dont hear a chime.
if you check sounds and notifications, you will see that there is no option for a sound for a Soft Reset.
unless this is the same for PPC2K2, I think maybe there just isnt a chime at all for PPC2K3 and thats how its meant to be? just a guess.
maybe they have cocked it up..
its not a problem though, really I dont think

In PPC2002 there was not an option to turn the reset chime off either.
My guess is that there was supposed to be a chime and that is the click noise during reset. The clicking in WM2003 is right about where the chime was in PPC2002... so I think they messed it up a bit.
The clicking isn't a big problem to me, IMHO. I wanted the OP to know that others have the clicking and I wanted to find out if there was a chime there in WM2003 or if the chime was missing for everybody.
Thanks for letting me know. :D

Well, I think the clicking might be related to the "other" sound problems in WM2003. A pure guess on my part, but I think there is a chime after the reset (just like in PPC2002) and the sound problems in WM2003 may be causing it not to play.
If we rely on the people that COULD tell us for sure (Dell), we will all be living in the retirement home before we get a factual, straight answer. :crooked:
