Changing default "My Documents" folder

I have looked around at different ways of changing the "My documents" folder from my Main memory onto either my SD or CF cards to no avail. I want to change the actual location in the WM2003 OS and not just the synchronization folders like with MightySync. Does anyone have a solution for this? Perhaps it is a matter of editing the registry, however I am hesitant to do that as I am not that experienced and would not know where to look for it.

Thanks!!

You'll need a registry editor for this.
Once you get it, browse to the following key:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Explorer\Shell Folders"
For String "My Documents", change the data value "\My Documents" to the desired folder you'd want it to be relocated to. Then Soft-Reset and you're set.

Raymond - thanks for the info. I have tried this and it did not work. I also tried the tip at http://www.mobilitysite.com/forums/a...hp/t-3565.html which did not work.

Perhaps there is something I am missing. I definitely did everything as per the instructions

Bioniv4.0 - thanks for the response.

What I want to do is free up more memory on my Ipaq, i.e. standard system memory (64Mb) by moving "my documents" folder to my storage cards. So whenever I sync the files will sync directly to my storage card.

I cannot get this right at all. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I'd love to know how to move My Documents out of Main Memory too. It would greatly free up much needed RAM. Why Microsoft dis this garbage in the first place is beyond me. Even now with WM5 and persistant storage it isn't perfect...

Hi, this may help... (taken from Pocket PC Thoughts website)

Quote:
Has anyone noticed an "ignore_my_docs" zero byte file on their storage card or ROM file store? I think this was done in the Pocket PC 2002 OS because people had trouble finding data on their storage card unless they had specifically created a \My Documents\ folder.

So, the Pocket PC 2002 now looks at the storage card when you insert it. If \My Documents\ doesn't exist, it puts a hidden file called "ignore_my_docs" on the card. It also has done this to the HP Safe Store or iPAQ File Store. So, what does it do? Well, Pocket PC 2002 apps see this hidden file and look at the root of the storage card for everything. This can be very annoying if you have a large card with hundreds of files on it in other subfolders. For example, my storage cards always look like this:

\Music\
\My Documents\
\app1\
\app2\

Don't get me started on apps being installed in the root versus under a \Program Files\ folder. That is another rant. Ok, if ignore_my_docs exists, apps like Excel and Word will scan the entire card looking for their files. Prepare to wait if it is a 1GB microdrive that is full. The solution is to create \My Documents\ on the card and delete the hidden ignore_my_docs file. To delete it, either dock your device and use Explorer on the desktop, assuming it is configured to see hidden files, or tap-and-hold in File Explorer on your Pocket PC in the white area below a file listing and select "View All Files." The beauty of this is that Windows Media Player on the Pocket PC 2002 doesn't require music to be in \My Documents\ any longer as it did under the Pocket PC 2000 OS, so all of your music is still readily available.

Edit: The above also applies to Pocket PC 2003 and 2003 SE devices as well as all ROM file stores on any device that allows you to store data there.
I think you may still need to do a registry edit as above, but this may be what you're after to complete the task?

I think Microsoft's reasoning behind the folder always being in main memory is in the cases of people switching memory cards regularly.

Thats a shame really, as I remember it working mostly for me. I think the only problem I had was the Nevo settings files - they saved in the iPAQ file store if I remember correctly even though I want them in my "My Documents" folder as it will backup to my PC then on a syncronise.

I will keep playing and if I find anything that works aswell, I will post back and offer it up.

I can get the iPaq to synchronise but it does not do it properly. I have carefully checked every step that I have taken and it does not work.
