Windows Mobile 2003 Update

For those of you with the "crippled" axims due to a slow/faulty Windows Mobile 2003 op system.

Called Dell support centre today and was told the update would be out on Sept. 19.

Was also told there was no need to "register" for the upgrade as they have records of which axims are affected and will be automatically sending out the upgrade on CD.

Here's hoping.

Cheers

Sure. And they are being late because they are developing a new technology to teleport the upgrade CD right into your mailbox. What if you bought your Axim in a store and didn't send the registration card to Dell ?

Today's lame excuse for me (I live in France, and I'm getting my CD postponed every day) was that the patch was too successful, and they were short on CDs. Rigggght.

Not exactly. Since up to know Dell has not been able to get a story straight.
Call again and the cust service will tell you something entirely different.

Whose line is it anyway?

schuh, 24 hours later (11:00am ET 8/28) I spoke to a Dell tech who informed me that the patch CDs started shipping LAST week! Sadly, though not suprisingly, they couldn't tell me if mine had shipped, or when it would ship...

Most first level support centers work from a script, that way everyone gets the same story. Apparently, Dell operates in a more 'improvisational' style (it shipped last week, next week, next month..say whatever gets the biggest laugh!).

Come to think of it, wasn't that tech's name Colin...

Saw this article on Cnet:
http://msnbc-cnet.com.com/2100-1041_...&subj=cnetnews

quoting a Dell 'representative' saying (on 8/22) they had no firm date for shipping the patch. Assuming that 'Colin' was mistaken, I called Dell once more:

This tech also told me they were shipping last week. When I directed her to the article, she ran up the chain of command to check her facts:

1) the CDs haven't shipped
2) the CD was 'approved' 8/27 and sent to Zomax 8/28
3) Zomax will press the CDs & start shipping them on 9/5

While the date sounds suspiciously like the 'Friday of next week' dates I got in late July & early August, the amount of detail she provided leaves me hopeful...

PickPocketPC,

I'd so very much want to believe that all of the information Dell tech support gave you was true. However, somehow, even though it all sounds legit, I'm still skeptical that they knew what they were talking about.

a) That still sounds like the old timeframe for shipping the CDs (Sept. 10-11), or in other words, dated information.

b) It just sounds too good to be true, why (if Dell knows about a ship date) would they not simply post it somewhere or leak it to the press or send it to their Oct.1 customers who would probably find a great deal of relief in knowing that their CDs would ship a month earlier than they're supposed to.

I sure hope that everything you were told is true and accurate, yet, I have this sneaky feeling that the 5th of September will come and go with absolutely no sign of anything shipping or changing. This sort of thing has just happend too many times now, and I probably won't beleive anything until I start hearing about people in the US with CDs in hand.

Out of curiosity (and because I'm new and not quite sure what it is) is this the patch to upgrade the ROM to A05?

bdoc,
yes, the 'patch' is for the lucky few (hundred?) who got early versions of PPC2003 factory installed on their Axims (A04 ROM) and is exptected to bring those machines to A05 - just like the patch file that Dell posted to their support site for 24 hours and then pulled.

ajabbari,
there's no doubt that Dell support has had a lot more wrong information than right. There may, however, be a difference between the upgrade ("Oct 1 customers") and the patch release dates. I certainly hope that Dell ships the patch out first (or if it's the same CD, ships it to those who need the patch first). While I appreciate the frustration of the PPC2002 customers, at least their Axims are tolerable...

Totally agree, when I spoke to a Dell Tech in this "Country", they told me they were aware of the units that went out with the bad ROM, and they would be sending the update patch to these individuals. Won't even mention the less than beleivable information that I have received when I speak to a technician that is not based in this country, since all of the date changes it is hard enough to believe any Tech from Texas when you speak to them also. I am so far having no problems with my unit other than slow speeds, so will wait to see if & when I receive a CD in the mail with the patch. Will post and let everyone know if & when that happens....
Insanity, Keep doing the same things & expect different results!!

I called UPS with the tracking number to verify this and indeed they have the parcel and should be delivered in the next day or so.

Hang in there, they are being sent......

I work at a University that has many for these corrupt PDAs. I myself have an axim but it's the old 2002 Rom and works great. We got word from our Dell rep that these CDs should be to us in a week or so from 08/04/03. I can't wait to demo it. later.
