PPC 2003 VPN Clients?

Contrary to how the last post I made sounded, I'm not out to rip off Microsoft, but I am out to make their product (that apparently isn't compatable with 2002 VPN clients) work!

Does anyone know of a working VPN client for 2003? The school network here doesn't support the built in VPN support so I need an actual client.

Just how new is PPC 2003??? There's not that much out on the internet about it and seems like not that much software for it!

A large majority of PPC2002 programs work with WM2003. Have you actually tried one of the PPC2002 VPN Clients on your Axim? Most of them have trial versions that you can test with. WM2003 is a very new operating system, so many of the products that still say "for ppc2002 only" might possibly work for you. It's worth a shot if it has a demo anyhow.

I am also very much interested in VPN (I think IPSec) in WM 2003. movianVPN is my main choice, since I am more familiar with it, so movian not working is disappointing to hear.

I did find some confusing info online though:

"Windows Mobile 2003 includes many new features specifically for the enterprise, such as new VPN (Virtual Private Networking) support, IPv6, enhanced synchronization, device management, and more. In case you missed it, Windows Mobile 2003 is reviewed in this issue on page 14.
...
Microsoft continues to support PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) in their VPN client for Windows Mobile. In addition, Microsoft has added IPSec/L2TP—IP Security, and Layer2 Tunneling Protocol —to its Windows Mobile VPN client."

Can anyone verify this?

I can verify that it doesn't work on the network here... and the IT staff here is warning people not to install movian. The official reply to my question for the IT staff here is as follows:

"At this time, PPC2003 is *not* compatible with our AirLink system. This is an issue with Microsoft\'s PPC operating system; when you attempt to install the VPN authentication software [MovianVPN], the handheld\'s memory becomes corrupted and must be hard-reset.
The built-in VPN function also does not work.
We are working on a solution, but at this time there is none. Be advised that PPC2002 has almost no differences from 2003, so installing it instead may be an option."

Anyone got some ideas??

None of this matters a lick if there's a technical reason for WM2003's native VPN client not working with your network, but I think I figured out how to enable VPN under WM2003:

Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Connections -> Advanced.

Tap Select Networks. Under "Programs that automatically connect to a private netowkr should connect using," tap New. Enter your VPN settings in the VPN tab here.

Soft reset to lock in the freshness.

Now, when you tap the connectivity icon (the double arrow next to the clock) you'll have an option to connect to the new network you just created.

I've done all of that, and I still get "problems" when trying to connect to the VPN server. No word yet on what kind of "problems" since WM2003 won't let me see a real error message.

Many VPNs don't support the built-in VPN connection in PPC2002 and WM2003. That's why most of them recommend using MovianVPN.....now if they'd just release a WM2003 version of their software.

VPN

Bottom Line: If the VPN isn't PPTP or IPSec/L2TP,the built in WM 2003 VPN won't work. You also can run into certificate requirements w/L2TP, and PPTP isn't used as much because of security vulnerabilities. So, you're left with Movian.
Best Regards,

Wooch
