Still Waiting

I have Dell's buggy version of WM2003. Twice I was told that the flx was on it's way.
Very aggravating to see upgraders have gotten there package already.

Yeah me too. I am not very happy in the way Dell handled this issue. :bang:
Thanks,
Dave

Hmm

Still waiting too...but losing patience...

I tried to find a pattern in the delivery schedule based on the postings from people who've already received it. I've ruled out:

1) Geography (disks received in Minnesota, Texas, California, New York - I'm in NY)

2) Order Date (Some ordered in late June, some in mid-July - I'm July 7)

3) 'Squeaky Wheel' (I've called 5 times since 8/1)

4) Need (one poster had returned his Axim & got the patch anyway, another had PPC2002, ordered the Upgrade & received the patch disk instead :crooked: )

I haven't given up yet - I'm currently investigating the following possible methods Dell used to prioritize shipments of the patch:

a) Alphabetically by mother's maiden name. (that's 'P' for me - I may have to wait a while)

b) Price paid (the folks with loaded 400Mhz Axims go first - I picked up a Basic for $169, I'll probably be the last to ship)

c) Supermarket checkout sort (Yes, whatever checkout lane I stand in immediately grinds to a halt "price check!" )

I just hope they don't start shipping Upgrades on 9/17 (the current rumor) if they haven't finished shipping the patches...:rolling:

Since the upgrade CD (2002 to 2003) would be different from the patch disk it really would not affect you at all if they started shipping the upgrade on the 17th....

I bought my Axim near the end of June and Dell said I was entitled to a FREE upgrade...I haven't heard "boo" from them in months. I guess I'll have to start making some noise.

Of course it wouldn't affect me...it's the principle of the thing...

Theoretically, the same issues held up both disks (finding the WM2003 performance bug/'hack-proofing' the ROM/solving the problem with the installer). But even if both disks were ready to ship on the same day, it would seem 'fair' for Dell to dedicate all their packaging/shipping resources to the customers who have been living with a defective product for two months.

How do we KNOW that there will be two different disks? Is it not possible to detect the rom version in the Axim from the disk and load what is needed from there?

Good point. I can't think of any reason NOT to use the same disk - the ROM image should be identical. For some reason I seem to recall people posting pictures of the disks they received (the 'early editions' in Europe) and they were silkscreened differently (Repair vs. Upgrade) but that may have been the only difference...

aggravating is an understatement...

this was the first experience i've ever had with dell and luckily it was my company that paid for the x5. it goes w/o saying that it will be my last experience with dell as well.

my boss, who does a lot of business with dell (as does our company in general) is also very frustrated with how dell has handled (or not handled) this situation.

i'm most suprised with the different story each csr will tell you, some being BLATANT lies. is it dell policy to lie to customers? or do they just have the most incompetent call center employees, supervisors and quality assurance staff ever assembeled?

Isn't it the truth regarding Dells Call Center Employees...that is exactly how I feel about them too.

"I just hope they don't start shipping Upgrades on 9/17 (the current rumor) if they haven't finished shipping the patches..." [...] "Of course it wouldn't affect me...it's the principle of the thing..."

I'm not sure how that's principled. Technically, we 2002 users have been waiting just as long for a working 2003 update and we're all stuck at a slower speed and are missing utilities. Many of us ordered the upgrade and have had to deal with Dell cancelling our orders and generally screwing around too.

I could sort of see your point if Dell was diverting resources from the relatively small number of people who bought Axims between June 23 and July 27, but you actually agree that it wouldn't affect you (or anyone else who is in your situation)... and Dell clearly has started shipping CDs to those users... and any delays are most likely procedure or delivery issues. So holding up the rest of us is really sort of pointless. It won't speed up your getting the CD.

The only reason I can think of to hope that they don't ship in such a case is spite - and that's not my idea of principles.

Personally, I hope they get all the CDs to everyone as fast as possible no matter which reason you have for the upgrade.

I had an Axim with PPC 2002 on it, and loved it. Ran great. Trouble is, it was stolen.
When I got this new one with the 2k3 OS on it, I could barely stand using it, the thing was so slow. Especially after having an Axim that worked so well.
I would gladly flash this thing to PPC 2k2 if I could. I can't understand why anyone would want to be bothered with this new OS. Even with A05 I'm reading how the sound sucks, many drivers do not work, etc.
It is obvious...the priority should be to fix the buggy Dells that were sold, then upgrade the ones that want 2k3.

Jeff, you quoted everything from my post except the one thing that contradicts yours...

My intention wasn't to start a war of words between 2002 'upgraders' and 2003 'patchers', but there really is a difference. There is a reported performance enhancement from 2002 to 2003 which I'm sure you're anxious for (and entitled to if you were promised the upgrade), but the A04 version of 2003 is defective and performs significantly worse, in some cases nearly unusable - (tell your boss you can't schedule a meeting for 15-20 seconds while transcriber 'hangs') than 2002.

Yes, I too hope that everyone gets their disks as quickly as possible...maybe when we're all on A05 we can join hands & sing Kumbaya :)

You are my soul mate. The same thing happened to me which just added insult to injury. In fact, I had to read your post twice because I was sure I didn't write it!!!! I even feel more frustrated just to find out that from your post that the A05 isn't as great as what it should be.....
