Start menu unremoveable duplicate items

Hi, all-

I'm running the Japanese version of Windows 200 on a Dell Axim X50v. I'm having a weird problem with the start menu.

I want to remove some entries from the top section of the start menu. When I go to Settings/Menus, four items appear twice in the list - ActiveSync, Help, Home and Mail. Each of the duplicates is checked once. These items don't appear twice in the start menu.

When I try to "un-check" one of these items to remove it, I get an error message that says that the item can't be removed.

If I use File Explorer to examine the Windows/Start Menu folder, it is empty except for the Programs sub-folder.

Any thoughts about how to resolve this?

I've never had programs appear twice, so can't help you there. But did you check and make sure none of the programs that you want to remove are running? Not sure if that matters, but something to try. Also, did you do a soft reset before trying to remove the extra items?

Start menu unremoveable duplicate items - Solved

Further investigation (while waiting for someone else to bail me out) has yielded the solution.

In the Japanese version of Windows 2003 on our Axim, there were two start menus, present as folders in the Windows folder. One was named "Start Menu", in English, and was empty. The other was named スタート メニュー (Staato Menyu), and contained all the links.

The problem of the duplicates was due to having links in two places: the Staato Menyu folder itself, and also in the "Programu" folder within Staato Menyu. The problem was fixed by manually removing the duplicate entries which were within the Staato Menyu folder, leaving them alone in the Programu folder.

After that, when I go to Settings/Menu those items were no longer checked and I could check and uncheck items at will.

Thanks to Beth for her suggestions.
