Countdown to 17 September 2003
Most of the newssites have indicated that Sept 17 is the date that Dell is going to start shipping the upgrade CDs (or at least, taking orders) and possibly when the new Axims will show up.
Of course, without an official announcement, that date is just speculation, but since it's now just over a day away, I figured it would be fun to start the countdown. So here we go... one day and a bit ( assuming they update around noon). JL

Welcome to Sept 16. It seems that our American friends are getting their update CDs and for those lucky enough to still have their order in the queue, some are getting the full upgrade CDs too, so we have some signs of life.
I'm currently on the phone to Dell Canada trying to order a CD. I'll let you know how it goes, but there's like a 27 minute wait time. I guess everyone is calling Dell now they've heard the CDs are out in the States. JL Followup: After waiting an hour on hold, I was informed that their offices are closed for the evening. Sheesh. We'll try again tomorrow.

Upgrade CD Shipped
I just checked my Order Status at Dell's website and it shows my Upgrade CD shipped. When I checked earlier this morning, it still showed an estimated ship date of October 14th. I guess the rumors about September 17th were true.
I ordered the CD on June 25th and notified Dell to continue the order when they sent the e-mail last month. Hope this is encouraging news to everyone else (although based on some of the information posted, I don't know if I will go ahead with the upgrade right away).

Heath, no problem. As soon as I have one, I'll post it here.
Ok.. got through to Dell just now (only a 2min wait at 1:20pm PST). They're saying they do not have them available in Canada yet, but expect them on 20 Sept - which is a Saturday... although he said Friday... so a little confusion. I'll call back on Friday and see what's up. Dell Canada's order phones are only open M-F 10am to 8pm EST, so I can't see how I can order it on Saturday - but I'll give it a shot just for completeness. ![]() Still, at least the delay dates are getting shorter. I did point out that the CDs are shipping in the US and he agreed, but that they aren't available here yet.... but soon. Always soon... ![]() Semper fi. JL

I just checked my order status and it says my order shipped on 1/1/0001. That must be so the shipping looks like the delay!

Essentially, it will either appear on their site in the software and peripherals section or you have to call and order verbally. In truth though, I'd call. When the upgrade was first announced, it never actually showed up on the site and they were taking orders. The Dell Canada number is 1-800-WWW-DELL (1-800-999-3355). You can quickly get past all the questions by hitting: 1 if you're English - 2 if you're French pause for start of message 3 pause for start of message 1. When you call, you'll get a customer receptionist who will ask you what you want to buy - he/she's really just routing your call. Tell them you want to purchase the Windows Mobile 2003 system software upgrade for the Dell Axim. They'll ask if it's personal or business (answer as is appropriate) and then they'll tell you how long a wait you have and put you in the queue. Really, all they want to hear is 'Axim' 'Software' and 'Personal' or 'Business' because that's how they route the calls, so don't make it complicated at this step. When your call is picked up, repeat what you told the receptionist and they'll either tell you it's not available or take your order. It's pretty simple. It's just not terribly efficient. ![]()

Axim upgrade CD delays
I got the same voicemail, except mine said Oct. 22. I'm in NY for what it's worth. I know the Texas plant was slowed for a few days due the last virus outbreak, so that probably added to the delay.

I got the update CD package today (well yesterday now). I was able to perform the upgrade in 20 minutes, very pain free and easy to do. Then I had to reinstall all my programs, which took a little longer. I did encounter some problems getting my DCF-660W wireless CF card to work though. I had to disable WEP on my router for it to work. I'll play with the settings some other time.

As of today Sept 19, Dell Canada says that the upgrade has been pushed back to "mid-October". The customer rep knew about the Sept 17 date and knew what I was trying to get, so he sounded like he was proactive enough to know what's going on...
So alas, as of today - the Sept 17 date is dead. My guess - the Axim owners who bought theirs during the two weeks that they were shipping the A04 version ROM are getting their updates first - then everyone who is already in the channel (ie: still have active orders for the upgrade) will get theirs... then finally it will go on sale for everyone else. Coupled with illness at the production company (as Iceman notes), they probably can't get enough product to risk selling retail yet. See you in mid-October. ![]()

Upgrade CD's came to Seattle today...
One of the guys in my office got his upgrade CD today via Airborne Express. The website says that they shipped mine on Sept. 18th. For what it is worth, he ordered his CD on the same day I did - June 24th.
