Update to 2003 - Backup restore does not work.

Hey all,

I just upgraded from 2002 to WM2003 using the update CD. I did a full backup prior to doing the update. Well the update went well but when I try and update the backup from the storage card it goes from 4% to 100% instantly and it saids that the backup is complete but it does not restore anything. I also tried to resore from my hard drive using the same restore file and AS saids that the fire format is not valid. What gives has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it? I would hate to re-install all my apps and data again. Thanks.

I doubt that you can do a Restore of PPC2002 data on the WM2003 operating system. This is just an assumption, as I have not upgraded to WM2003 yet. Anyone that has upgraded want to confirm??

That is what I thought as well, but the dell installer tells you to back up data because it will be lost.

They probably just didn't think their wording through before writing it in the installer application. Most likely, it's probably the same installer application that came with the A04 > A05 update CDs. In which case, those users would have already had WM2003, so the backup data would still be able to be restored....because the operating system wouldn't be changing for them.

OR

It could mean, just make sure you have synced recently, so that you do not lose all of your schedules, contacts, etc. Outlook will still transfer those back over to your PDA once you sync after the upgrade. It is just the actual backups that cannot be restored.

Oh well. I have 1/2 of the apps installed and the sync is working well again. I had problems with BIOS A03 and AS 3.7. So far everything seems the same but the wireless stuff is nice. Thanks for the replies people.

Actually, on the installer page I saw - it clearly says NOT to use the Backup and Restore features - but to backup and restore MANUALLY by copying the files either onto a storage card using file File Explorer, or using the Explore mode in ActiveSync. They don't even recommend backing up your databases - suggesting that you sync first, then force a restore sync copying data from Outlook back to the PDA.

The version I saw was fairly recent.

I suspect that basic formats like the Backup file format has changed from 2002 to 2003. Then again, so many weird things have happened during this transition that I have NO idea anymore.
