I just received my MM2003 upgrade in the mail today. There are two CD included, what is the difference between the two? They are labeled the same but with different color labels. Thanks for your help. I'm looking forward to the upgrade.
I received two disks. One is blue and is labelled "Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC 2003 Companion CD". This contains ActiveSync 3.7, Outlook 2002, and some other apps.
The second disk is the upgrade itself. Mine is purple and labelled "Microsoft Pocket PC 2003 Premium Edition for Upgrading the Pre-Installed Software on your Dell Axim X5".
I got my upgrade package last night. Backing up the PPC 2002 ROM and installing the PPC 2003 upgrade took about thirty minutes (not, of course, counting the time it took to re-install all of my applications).
IMHO, the improvements in the "Connections" process are worth the US$30 price.
I received the purple CD only. I downloaded ActiveSynch 3.7 from Microsoft's web site before installing the Pocket PC 2003.
So far, I have been unable to make Journal Bar work with the new OS. (Either Verison 4.0 or Version 4.2 -- both of which are Pocket PC 2003 compatable.) When I install either version, they lock the Axim. After a soft reset, the Axim will work but Journal Bar will not download data.
Received my package an hour ago. Not started install yet (backing up). My package included a blue and a purple disc. If I was you I'd ask for the other.
Fingers crossed here I go.............

I just got home and sitting on my doorstep was my upgrade CD's from Dell. I received both CD's. I was actually quit surprised as I had originally ordered the upgrade by phone the first day it was available months ago, and this was without any phone calls or emails from Dell letting me know it was delayed.
Anyway, after opening the package, on the front page of "manual" there is a section called "UPDATING DRIVERS"
There it states:
"If you are upgrading from the Pocket PC 2002 operating system to Pocket PC 2003, you need to update the device drivers for the peripherals. You can find the updated drivers on the Dell Support website at support.dell.com."
Any idea what drivers they are talking about? I went to the website, and it looks like I need to log on to their website and create an account.
Are the drivers Dell is talking about for add on items like a Wireless Compact Flash card, or keyboard?
If this is something I don't need, then I won't create an account at Dell just to get the drivers.
Thanks for the info...I guess it helps if I stop shaking, wipe the nervous sweat off my forehead, and calm down just a tad...and read the labels!! I saw PC 2003 on both CDs and lost it!
I do not want to rush to install this, they had too many problems to send it and I saw some others users reporting some applications that may not work properly after upgrade.
Another not good thing is the information from Dell saying that update drivers first! This does not sound right.
Now I think the best to do is create a plan before the Upgrade:
- Make a list of all applications that you want to continue using
- Check is all those applications are working fine or need upgrade for PPC 2003
- When you ready, then make Backup to all files, normally I always done two backups, one to a memory media and the3 second to my computer, this is because on the past I was unable to restore one Backup file, always getting on 98% I got an error message, so two backups are better than one.
- Read all the Instructions
- Do the Upgrade
- Test the device clean without applications
- Restore Backup
- Re-Install any application that needs upgrade
- Check again all applications and data
- Do your first backup again after upgrade

I have both the WM2003 and Journal Bar also; actually purchased JB several months ago and have updated it several times because of upgrades. I think the last upgrade (sometime in August) added a requirement (or capability) to denote whether or not you need a proxy server. You do this by scrolling through JB to the section that has the four buttons on the right side. The button that looks like the red circular check mark will allow the provy setting. When I fixed that, mine started working again. Don't know if this will help, but good luck!
