Follow up - just put in my order - sales rep was way ahead of me -as soon as I started calling out the SKU he finished it for me and took the order quickly. He asked how long I'd been waiting and then waived the shipping charges. Said they had lots in stock and I should have it within 8-10 days max, probably within 2 days really - 'It'll be flying to you' :)

I'll let you know. :)

Thanks for the information on the Pocket PC 2003 update software. I tried the numbers that you gave and I was told that this was not available until the end of the month. (it still isn't ready) I am not sure if this is a communcation problem at Dell or that you may be waiting a week or two.

I'm assuming you're calling Dell Canada, not Dell US (you don't have a location specified, so I can't be sure). I would try calling back. I suspect not everyone at Dell has caught up yet.

In fact, to make sure, I just called them back again right now and they confirmed it had 'just become available' and was shipping right now.

Remember, not all the reps at Dell's order centre are.. mmm... shall we say... proactive about keeping current about these things.

Also, let me remind everyone of the order process to make sure everyone gets through fast:

In Canada ONLY - 1-800-WWW-DELL (1-800-999-3355) then hit 1 (wait for message) 3 (wait for message) 1 (wait for message).

You'll get a receptionist. Tell him or her that you "want to purchase the Windows Mobile 2003 upgrade software for the Dell Axim for personal use". It's important to include the words 'software' 'Axim' and 'personal' because that's how they route you to the right place.

Then when the sales rep comes on line, repeat the same thing again. If they seem confused, include the SKU number 310-4214. If they still seem confused, tell them that you were told specifically that the product was shipping and to call in an order and ask if he/she could check will their supervisor, or ask for another sales rep.

I suspect that if a sales rep doesn't know for sure - they just automatically suggest you call back in a week or so.

Anyway, hope this helps, and of course, until it shows, we don't know if this is the 'real deal'. I'll let you know as soon as it does (or doesn't... :)

Jeff

Thanks! I am in Canada and called the Dell Canada number. I tried again (3rd attempt) and finally got someone who knew that it has just been released. I placed an order and will wait to see what arrives. Thank you again for getting the news out and I hope for you and I both that things go smooth with the upgrade.

Glad I could help!

Trust me - it takes a lot of patience and perseverence to get Dell moving - ya just gotta hang in there...

There's a light at the end of the tunnel... :)

Or was that...

There's a light... over at the Frankenstein place...

Let me know if you do get it by the end of the week. I'm just curious cuz I placed my order last Wednesday and it hasn't shipped yet. I am told it's not in stock in Canada (confirmed the SKU #). It's shipping from Austin to Toronto to Montreal so I'm certainly not getting it this week.

Thanks to JeffLewis' initial post in this thread, I just called Dell USA and was apparently successful in ordering the upgrade. I am banking a little on the Canadian upgrade being the same as the US, as the CSR could not confirm this. Managed to get free shipping, but lost the 15% discount I had in June when I first ordered - Total cost $31.10. Now I just have to wait for the November 5 ship date.

November 5th shipping date? That's... way later than almost everyone else I've seen report.

Bizarre.

I know. I only hope that either: (a) my original order didn't really get cancelled and the disks will magically appear in my mailbox, or (b) it will actually ship in the next few weeks, with the Dell web site never showing any change in status, as seems typical. ;)

If you don't want to read a vent session, stop reading now...

I don't know about you guys but my frustration peaked today. I called Dell Canada Customer Care and actually spoke to the same person I spoke to in July about my free upgrade to WM2003. The line I was given was that the technical issues are not resolved yet and they are not shipping CD's yet. I tried to explain that many people are receiveing their orders and even referred them to the Dell Support formums where people are talking about receiving their orders and asked why is Canada the only place that isn't shipping out CD's. She then put me on hold to go speak to someone else and came back with the same answer. So, I asked her if she could conference someone from Sales in to see if they knew if the SW was shipping and she told me she wasn't allowed but if I wanted to, I could call them myself and see.

So, I called Dell Canada Sales and asked if they were shipping WM2003 and he immediately came back with a yes. Then I proceeded to explain the situation and I got the "Oh you'll have to work with Customer Care to get the free upgrade" line. I then asked him if he could conference in the Customer Care Rep I had been speaking with so we could resolve this once and for all. He tried and then came back and said the call wasn't going through as he thinks they are not allowed to call Customer Care internally. He then gave me his name and extension so I could call back into Customer Care and have them call hime instead...

(Deep breath...)

So I called Customer care back, and of course got another person who I had to re-explain the whole situation over to. I was then given the same line as the first customer care rep. I told her about my call to Sales and gave her the contact info of the guys I spoke. She put me on hold for at least 15 minutes, I took a leak, was back on hold for a while and then she came back and said "Sorry but I don't know what to say, orders will be shipped out when the SW is ready." THey can't/won't even give me an order number so I can track it online. They just say yes I qualify for the free upgrade but I'll get the SW when it is ready...

(Final Chapter in this saga...)

So I'm browsing the Dell Canada Support site for contact info to vent at (obviously I didn't find it 'cause I'm venting here instead.) and I end up getting to a link from the Dell Canada website that sends me to Dell Corp website so I go there on the "Chat with a Rep" site. There is even a specific topic for "Who do I contact for..." topic. I copied the whole conversation (but won't subject you to it) but was basically told to complain to Customer Care or send a mail message to corporate headquarters...

I give up. Wasted a couple of hours and I'm still getting nowhere.

Again, sorry for the venting.

I am dumbfounded. Sorry to report this, ddeacon, because of your infuriating experience, but the upgrade that I just ordered yesterday and was not due to ship until November 5 just showed up on my desk! Go figure.

Ya...but you look like you are in the US. It really seems Dell Canada Customer Care are completely uninformed and their "free upgrade" program is a waste of time.

True I'm in the US, but I encountered just as many Dell CSRs here that hadn't a clue. One yesterday had no idea that their PDA used a separate operating system, and certainly didn't know where to begin to look for it in their parts inventory (this before I found the part # at Aximsite). Keep trying ddeacon, you're bound to find someone that can shed light. 'Course just when you make that connection, your upgrades will probably show up all by themselves. Maybe they're going thru the alphabet in reverse and they haven't gotten to the Ds yet.
