WiFi Power Off in PPC 2003?
I upgraded to PPC 2003, and have an AmbiCom 802.11b card...drivers work and I can connect...

What I can't seem to do is turn off the wireless card when I don't need it...the only way to do it is to pull the card out.

There is a "wireless" tab in the power settings in 2003, but it's greyed out and inactive for me (even with the 802.11b card installed).

Is there something I need to do to make this work? An undocumented feature?

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

A new driver came out yesterday for the Ambicom card. Install it and see if they enabled the feature in that revision.

Nevermind - it's not enabled. Except for possibly better range I can't discern any changes in this new driver. In fact, the driver revision listed on the site hasn't changed. ??

Agreed. This seems to be the same AmbiCom driver that they previously released.

The only difference I see is that this version has a text file explaining how to do the install.

Even with the new driver, I agree--there's no way to turn off the power on the AmbiCom card.

Does this occur with other 802.11b cards on the Dell?

Same Issue With Netgear MA701
Power buttons grayed out here too. This PPC2003 upgrade has actually reduced functionality in WiFi cards/utilities.

Check out what Microsoft has on their site regarding what functionality should be there:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...2003/wifi.mspx

Zero Configuration Wi-Fi

Seems there could be some really cool stuff here, but either AmbiCom or Dell isn't with the program (yet?)

Anyone know if the stuff on the Microsoft site is:

a) available with other WiFi cards on the Dell or
b) available with other PocketPcs?

Maybe it's just Microsoft "vapor ware"...

This functionality works on the Dell TrueMobile 1180 card.

Figures...guess that means the issue is with the 802.11b manufacturers, and their drivers, and not with Dell...

Just for the heck of it, I decided to try the newly released Ambicom drivers in Maximum Performance mode with WM2003 (which usually neuters the WiFi card). The card was no longer recognized. However instead of giving up, I entered the name of Ambicom's .dll file: PRISMNDS.DLL - hit OK and the card was recognized and functions great. Not only that, but the ability to turn wireless off now works as well (a function not available in any other mode). Try it for yourself and see if it works!

The only issue with the Dell TrueMobile Card is that it stays in Power Management mode. If you have a weak router, then it's an issue, otherwise no problem. Rumor has it that Dell is working on a new ROM to correct the issue.

tried the max power prismnds thing
Didn't work for me.... Maybe you have some kind of residual driver or something because I do not have that file on my ppc.

It also doesn't help those of us with the old Axims, without the maximum performance setting...

I was wondering if it was a 250 v 255 issue...

I recently upgraded my Axim (PXA250) to WM2003 and using the beta version of the Linksys drivers for my WCF12 card.

I am able to power off the WCF12 from the "Power Settings" as well as from the Network icon on the tray at the top.
