Device name not unique
I made it through the A05 ROM update fine. However, when I try to renew the partnership with the old device ID, Activesync gives me the following pop-up message:
"Device Name Not Unique - This device name is already in use. You must enter a different name for you mobile device."
Any ideas what gives? Maybe the simplest solution is to simply cave in and give it a new ID, let it resync with Outlook, and copy the files I want out of the old partnership account. Doesn't make sense, though I probably messed something up along the way. I've already soft reset the Ax, and removed/reinstalled AS 3.7 (it was time - it was doing some weird things).

Delete any partnerships in ActiveSync. Rename you Axim to something without underscores and try again.

Sorry, should have let you know I did that too. There are no existing partnerships. When I try and give it the old name I just get the error message and it won't go any further without changing the device ID.

I've been having similar problems. I have an underscore in my partnership name. Is this a known issue that you can't have underscores? Anyone know why?
Thanks

This trick might help, if you indeed deleted all partnerships:
Search your desktop PC for the Activesync profile folder.
If you find any subfolders (with old partnership names), delete them and then try to sync again
In XP PRO:
C:\Documents and Settings\==>Your User Name<==\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles

Deleted AS again; hacked the AX and PC registries to remove associations; deleted folders; and reinstalled/resysnced. Finally working ok. Don't ask me for too many details 'cause I gave up taking notes after a while.
Generally working, but it eventually gets to the point (while the Ax is sitting in the cradle) that the Sync only works for certain folders. The others are noted that "Attention is required", but won't let me / tell me what to do. The only solution so far is to reboot the PC or use Task Manager (win2k) to stop these AS processes: wcesmgr.exe and wcescomm.exe. Can't tell if maybe my cradle is going bad or if it's software.

The underscore is an issue with networking your Axim and has to do with the M$ networking utility not accepting certain characters in networked computer names. At least one person reported they had no problems with an underscore but it seems to be a common issue. That said, it shouldn't effect ActiveSyncing with the cable or cradle.

My Fix for ActiveSync problems
I had the same weird problems after updating to 2003
This worked for me - Uninstall activeSync 3.7, reinstall 3.7
Since them - I have seen it disconnect by itself once - after a 10+ hour connection.
Having some weird problems with AXIM back lighting turning off while docked. Only way I can get it back on is to undock/redock
I've probably got some setting messed up. Started after 2003 upgrade.

I tried posting this once and didn't see it, so forgive if this is a repeat. I tried being more specific anyway.
After deleting the ActiveSync user profiles under my XP profile, I opened regedit and went to:
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mobile Application Link\Devices
and deleted the FOLDERS referring to names of former lovers, er, Aximnames. Installation then proceeded on its own.

I have underscores and no problems. I have also run into the same thing with the name in use deal. The easy way is to do like you said and pick a new name and just let it resync. Like KPDUTY said it comes form there still be files for your old name. As for the reinstall of ActiveSync, that might work. But I would at least use the latest version 3.8. Good Luck~

Ooops
Also had to delete 3 or 4 references to the old name in regedit. But no problems with underscores.
