and the best part of the WM2003 upgrade was...

the ability to go back to PPC2002!!!

wow!
I can read avantgo
I can use drivers that let me connect to a DHCP network using a different gateway.
I can even use mappopolis without it jumping back and forward looking for my network card when the GPS is there.
I can even use my PPC without fearing that a "bleep" sound will crash it...

I love the WM2003 upgrade!

I must be the only person that can view Avantgo just fine in 2003.

Nope, Avantgo actually works better for me in 2003 than 2002. I had better hush I am sure the PDA gremlins will find out.

To have the latest and greatest you have to make some sacrifices. With most new OS many older appt are not going to work. It was that way for Win 9x over DOS and when I upgraded to Win 2000 3 months before it's official public release (I worked for the Dark Side at the time) There were few games back in late 1999 that would work on Win 2k and even fewer hardware drivers.

Is this hassle of drivers and appt not working in WM2003 worth it? To me yes. No matter how pissy I get when one will not work for me. I never look back.

I'm usually an early adopter of desktop OSes (as in the day they are released). However, for some reason, with the Axim and WM2003, I just can't bring myself to do the upgrade yet. Maybe its the fact that the improvements in 2003 are so marginal. Or maybe it is the fact that unlike a desktop OS where I could just download a patch or a driver when something isn't working, with the PPC I would have to wait for Dell to release the next ROM revision and hope that all of the drivers and other bugs I wanted fixed are. However, in the end I've received my upgrade, but I'm waiting to use it for the time being.

Well ajabbari, I can understand why you would wait. I did myself. All the nastiness that gone on with the folks that had the original release of WM2003 on their Axim did not prove it to be a most promising upgrade. Plus ones desktop is rarely made into an instant lawn ornament if the upgrade goes south.

For me it wasnt the apps not working(xept avantgo) but the whole thing feels wrong specially the zero configuration is great for people who want to steal WIFI or just use DHCP. For people who actually have specific needs the 2002 drivers for most cards offered you options that 2003 just doenst. The 2003 drivers for most card now come in a way so WM2003 take full control of the net options, which is not many options to begin with.

I dont understand why in hell didnt MS made the network easier like it is BUT with enough substance to let people enter their own info for the networks. Example, add a wireless network options and it will ONLY let you enter if it connects "To Work" and "the internet" which are LAAAAAAAAAAAME options. Since there is really not much difference. Why in heavens name didnt they learned from 2002 drivers that let you make network profiles so you can select where are you connected I dont know. I mean was it sooooooooo hard to make it so you can have something like this:

WIFI network "NETWORK NAME" found. This network is new. Please select the profile to use:

[ ]Auto Configure:(DHCP)
[ ]Profile 1
[ ]Profile 2
[ ]Profile 3

Where the profiles are profile the user has made before hand. This way they would have covered both bases, the "I cant configure a network if my life depended on it" people and the "Dang it I want it configure LIKE THIS you stupid piece of software!!!!" people.

Top it off with no ability to use keyphrases for WEP(only entering the full and its stupid, I mean really if they REALLY wanted to make it easy for people to join a network they should have made it easy for peple to join PROTECTED networks too, not just DHCP and off you go networks.

I agree the Wi-Fi does suck and blow all at once. That has been the biggest issue I have had with WM2003. I do not like how it takes control of the WEP neither. I found the Wi-Fi much more difficult in them simplifying it than 2002 was. It is just like Media player. I hate Media player! It is the hardiest thing to use. Why can't I just select a folder to play my music out of? Why must it be a damn playlist!

I don't get the "internet" "work" bit. It is all the same. Plus I use the work setting while at home.... Very lame. While installing my Wi-Fi I was blaming Linksys, but now I know it was Microsoft that was the culprit.

I do have to say, why in all of Win CE history have they not given me the simple option of totally shutting down my appts? After just a one-day with out a soft reset there would be 40 different appts open if I don't force them closed. This I was disappointed on not seeing in 2003. You would think after all the 3rd party software out there MS would have taken a hint? Nope

It is Microsoft’s way or the highway.

Best part about it was that Dell's lousy service and nobody knowing anything about my installation problem pushed me away from Dell to Compaq. Never going back. It's nice visiting sites like this and seeing all the problems that I'm not having now. Kinda like not being in the stock market and seeing it fall.

It took me three days to get everything I wanted in my Upgraded X5 Basic. I have Wifi for my home net, Bluetooth to check email from my cellphone, PocketStreets and a Map of my county, I have Pocket MVP for movies, a bible, work documents, over 1000 work contacts, A unit converter, a Machinist's Calculator and 256MB of MP3's.

The answer after all of the work it took to get it set up?

in a word.....SPEED!

It is so much faster opening and responding and it doesn't appear to be buggy at all. I have spent the past three days putting it thru it's paces and couldn't be happier.

Wow, now you guys really have me doubting the whole idea of moving to 2003 anytime soon. One of the reasons I've been looking forward to upgrading has been the alleged overhaul of the wifi/networking system.

I have a Truemobile Wifi card with PPC 2002, and with Dell's PPC 2002 drivers the thing isn't exactly working 100%. I mean if you establish a connection it's fine. However, if you try turning the radio off with the card in the Axim and then turn your Axim off, I've found that many times it will crash your Axim when you try to turn it back on (the radio enable/disable option is a fickle thing in general). Also, PPC 2002 has this wierd bug where half the time it won't properly get a DHCP address off of a network when you pop the card in, and the only way to get it to work (the DHCP release/renew functions don't) is to do a soft-reset.

Seems to beworking fine on my machine. I guess knocking on wood, cross your fingers and sacrificing flawless white virgin goats during the install did the trick.

Seriously, everything is working really well after the upgrade. A few things seem to be working better. I do think there's a memory leak somewhere though. I've had to do a few soft resets, say every other day, to clean stuff up. I'm not too crazy about that.

Everything else seems to be fine. Having said that, I've got to go look for a goat.

WM 2003

I updated to 2003 last weekend and have not noticed a single incident that you folks are complaining about. My Linksys works just fine, I did my first soft reset this morning only because I installed the utility to remove duplicate notifications I found out about elsewhere on the forum. Don't know if I had any or not but thought it sounded plausible. My homegrown C++ apps are all running and behaving. My GPS is fine, don't have Avantgo problems so for the time being I'm pretty happy. Of course I'm not as enlightened as some as I don't overclock, don't do too much video, but do use it for music a lot, and keep almost everything on 256 meg CF cards.

Actually this is a "WIFI Bug" happens on a quite a lot of routers and lots of cards mixes for some reason, not just PPC 2002...

Exclamation I'm sure you all...

had some issues with 2003. However, I had it go extremely well!
I have a Dell Truemobile WiFi card and it did not work well under 2002. After the upgrade to 2003 I downloaded the new driver from dell's web site and was connected in 2 minutes!

The range of the card was not good under 2002 BUT it is great under 2003!

The 15% or so speed up in general was great also. NO issues during or after the install. So I wanted people to know that it does work well on at least some systems (or at least one!)
