ActiveSync drops connection with USB cradle with WM 2003

Another issue since I've upgraded...

My Axim periodically will drop its ActiveSync connection with my computer. It's not predictable, and sometimes takes a while to occur, other times, it's very quick (only a few minutes).

The archives say to consider the following setting:

ActiveSync
Tools...Options
Options button
Set "Maintain Connection" when syncing remotely.

Unfortunately this didn't solve the problem (not sure why it would, as it's not a "remote" connection, but that's besides the point).

Anyone else have this issue with WM 2003 (and the Dell Upgrade)?

Any solutions/recommendations?

NOTE: I also have the alarm/sound notification failure issue...wonder if they're related somehow?

Comments? Recommendations?

I experience the same problem once in a while. I'm running a new Axim (400 mHz speed) with WM/PPC 2003 and ActiveSync 3.7.

Are you using the cable or cradle for connecting?

Are you connecting to an internal or external USB port?
If external, is it externally powered? (some have reported issues with under-powered USB ports, and USB cards that don't quite work altogether well with ActiveSync)

Do you notice that the connection dies after X amount of time when you first connect the unit to your computer? (mine does, usually after the first sync, then the connection dies...I just disconnect physically and reconnect then it maintains connection)

Once the connection dies, are you able to reseat/reconnect the Axim such that another connection is made?

I've chalked this one up as another example of poor programming on behalf of Microsoft. *sigh*

Using the USB cradle to connect, through an internal USB port. I've not noticed any real "pattern" to the disconnection (making it fairly hard to diagnose).

It does seem to allow me to reconnect if I pull the Ax out of the cradle...

Frustrating that someone (Dell? Microsoft?) has dropped the ball on this one (along with many others)....

Check out this otherthread too. In that post, marcusb points out a solution to the disconnect. I just made the change and don't know yet if it will solve the problem. I'll post back in a bit if I stay connected.

What isn't clear from marcusb's post is that the Axim sitting in the cradle appears to be considered remote syncing.

Oops, my bad. Not at work again 'til Monday. No other connections drops before I left yesterday. I'll let you know if the recommended solution works for me.

I'm getting the same thing on a new WM2003, running Activesync 3.7 on XP Home and a cradle.

Yup, I'm getting the same thing. My 'maintain connection' is already selected, and the other posters are right - there's no pattern. Sometimes it won't happen, other times I get that disconnect.

Exactly the same problem as well. I just turn of the Ax in the cradle and then turn it back on. Should not have to do this though.

Happens EVERTIME it tries to sync with Avantgo (works fine with everthing else), but only on my machine at work (IBM) On my Gateway at home I never get a dropped connection. I've tried the fix mentioned on this thread with no success. Must be something to do with power out of certain USB ports....

Mad Me too, constantly

This also happens to me, AS 3.7, WM '03... It happens all day, every day, and I have to reach over and un/reseat the Ax in the cradle to get it to reconnect.

I have a direct connection to the back of the machine, no USB hubs or other funky stuff...

Does anybody NOT have this problem? Could it be caused by some other software running on the Ax?

I'm having exactly the same problems: active sync that drops the connection sometimes and the sound/notification problem.

I see that a lot of people are having these problems: there should be some official information on this one, from Dell or from Microsoft.
Does someone know if users with handhelds other than axim are having these problems with wm2003?
