Since I upgraded from PPC 2002 to WM 2003 last week, the Axim powers off by itself shortly after turning it on with the power button.
I upgraded from PPC 2002 to 2003 with the Dell CD last week. All went well, quicker and easier than I had imagined.
I confirmed that all my programs would work (or at least claimed they would on their sites) with WM 2003 and then reinstalled them. Again, no problems.
However when I first power up (or wake it up?) with the power button, the Axim turns itself off after two or three touches on the screen, or about five seconds if I don't touch the screen. If I turn it right back on it seems to do just fine.
I notice that it is affecting Pocket Backup Plus - it doesn't seem to be able to turn it on and keep it on for its daily scheduled backup to my SD card. Previously PBP would power on the Axim, shut down all programs, perform the backup, and then shut off. The next time I would power on PBP would be sitting there asking me to click OK to initiate the soft reset. Now when I power on long after the backup was scheduled, PBP is sitting there waiting to start the backup. Apparently when it powers the Axim on for the backup, the Axim powers down, not allowing the backup attempt until I manually turn it on (twice, of course!).
Tonight when I powered on, the backup was waiting to complete. Elapsed time said 2:24:21 - almost two and a half hours. Normally tales less than ten minutes. It must have started a backup and partially completed when the Axim powered itself off.
My power management settings seem to be the same as they were before the upgrade.
Anyone else seeing this? Anyone else with PBP in particular seeing this?
Other programs I reinstalled are: Mapopolis 4.24, Handango Games Suite, Resco Picture Viewer 4.11, and Total Commander 1.21.
Oh, and the PBP backup log now says it could not backup one file: Windows\Activesync\GCounterFile.mmf, a 10.2k file that is dated and timed the same time as the backup started. Possible that Activesync tries to immediately connect upon power up?
Also, I notice that when I sync, I have internet pass-through access immediately. Never did with PPC 2002. Is there an internet connection setting from WM 2003 that powers off after checking, via Activesync, for an internet connection?
Sorry if I'm rambling. Writing this out has me thinking out loud!
I have noticed too that my Axim (got it in December 2002) now powers down before the 5 minutes of inactivity I setup in Power Settings. It does not happen all the time. Actually, since I upgraded to WM2003 about 2-3 weeks ago I only recall seeing that a couple of times. But it did happen. My old Jornada 560 with PPC2002 used to do this more frequently.

I also have the problem with power off gimmick and the pbp was hell to figure out...i had to cancel the "stop all processes" in the backup options be cause it did just that, stop ALL processes there fore performing a soft reset on it self. geez. still havent figured out why the avantgo does what it does though. that seemd weird... time to bug a lot of people about this..good day

Hey Giz,
What IS Avantgo doing? I haven't heard anything on that.
I have just gotten done with the 3rd reply to sprite software. they are firm in that they feel they have all the incompat. issues solved with WM2003 in there latest version of pbp 2.1.3 (released earlier this week) Get it here.
I will stay on sprite software and dell like a dog on a bone till something is done.
Also the power shut off problem I have experienced it too and I'm 99% sure it has to do with the battry mionitoring gimmick in pbp as well. Turned it off and smooth sailing.
feel free to send me email if you guys want and i will just start attaching it to my replies to sprite and well get this working soon i BET gizmox5@alltel.net

ooops sorry you started that thread...im just noticing the same stuff you are..was going to write exacly what you wrot about pbp, the turn off issue, and the avantgo file gimmik... thats all
I am having the same exact issue with PB+ that is stated in the first post of this thread. This includes the failed backup of the file. I will try the newest version of PB+ and post results.
Also, how do you turn off the battery monitoring?

Open Pocket Backup Plus on your Axim, click on Options on the bottom left of the backup screen, "Battery Monitoring" is the third item up. Click that and then remove the check mark next to "Enable Battery Monitoring".
I did this last night, right after downloading the latest PBP upgrade, and the power off problem has stopped. My next scheduled backup doesn't happen for a few more hours, so I don't know if that will work well, but I'll post back and let you know.
By the way, After installing the PBP upgrade, 2.1.3, the "About" screen still reads 2.1.2. Anyone else seeing this? I wrote Sprite support but haven't heard back yet.

Hi Gixmox.
I spoketh too soon last post! I had neglected to uninstall PBP from my desktop. Once I did that 2.1.3 showed on my Ax. The power-off problem is still there; with Battery Monitor disabled the problem goes away. So I don't enable the Battery Monitor feature anymore. The first scheduled backup after I reinstalled worked like a charm. I even wrote German at Sprite and told him it looked like he had that one licked. But that was the last scheduled backup that was able to "wake" the Axim and run by itself. Now when I power on anytime after a scheduled backup, it's sitting there just waiting to start. Then it runs fine. But it won't wake the Ax up to do it. So I wrote German again and told him it was just a false alarm - still no fix!
So we're missing the benefit of automatic, unattended backups, and the auto-backup when power level reached 30%.
However the backup function itself is still the best I've found, so the program is still well worth the price.
And since they've supposedly solved the issue with their iPaq Backup version, I have high hopes that they'll solve it for us. But they better make it available free, regardless of how long we've had our version, to make up for the lack of the schedule and battery monitor features.
I have noticed a marked increase in speed of backup since installing WM 2003. Like 25M, comressed, in 2.5 minutes to my SD card. Have you also noticed that it's faster now?
