I just recently received my x5 basic from ebay. Can I upgrade to wm2003?, and is it worth it? I do not mind paying for the upgrade if it makes my x5 better

Yes, upgrade to WM2003, it will make your X5 faster. I did, and never look back with my X5 400Mhz.

There are minor patches and updates that you can usually download from Dell's website.

However, going from PPC2002 to PPC2003 is considered a major upgrade and it is not free.

I don't think upgrading is important unless you have software that refuses to run under PPC2002 or you want to use a feature that is not present in PPC2002.

Here's a list of Windows Mobile 2003's new features:

Enhanced Connection Manager user interface
Zero Configuration connections
Improved animated connectivity status icons
Improved connectivity bubbles
Always-on Bluetooth discoverability
Use of Bluetooth modems
Bluetooth beaming
Auto-correct spelling
Auto-suggest in Inbox
One-touch turn all radios off
802.1x (Wi-Fi) support
Certificate Management UI
IPSec/L2TP
Support for Multiple VPNs
IPv6 support
New Today screen
Smart Lookup in Contacts
Windows CE 4.2 operating systems
.NET Compact Framework
Enhanced developer support
128-bit encryption strength for Crypto API
Improved power management
Windows Media Player 9 Series for Pocket PC 2003
Plus! Sync & Go
Support for Plus! Photo Story
Windows Movie Maker 2
Pictures
New version of Pocket Internet Explorer
"Jawbreaker" game
vCard and vCal support
Inbox signature support
New user notifications

The upgrade from PPC2002 to WM2003 is no longer available from Dell.

If someone wants to upgrade, search the web. It can be done for free. There is a download that can be used to upgrade to WM2003 using the CF card flashing method. It may not be legal, though, but since Dell no longer offers the upgrade, this may be the only solution.

Well I just went through hell and back with Dell customer service. It seems that they no longer offer the upgrade 2003 software for the axim 5. Ironically I found that their subsidiary in UK sells it but they are unwilling to ship it to the states. I am just baffled by the lack of service dell provides. Can anyone guide me to a place where I can get my hands on this CD? Will anyone on this forum be willing to somehow send me their copy for a small reward.

A desperate and disgusted Axim owner.

Won't the upgrade bring the user a big pain [potential loss of calendar reminders]?? I think this site has some messages reporting this problem.

I know that's important to the way I use my Axe.

Question OS for Dell Axim X 5

Has Dell relented in their decision not to make available a Windows Mobile 2003 SE? I have one of the very early models, an X5

Some PPC makers have, but I am not sure about Dell.

1. It was discontinued a while back, this is old news.

2. Your request that someone send you a copy for a "little reward" would be a direct license violation, and is against the site rules.

3. Search eBay, you might be able to find a legitimate copy there.

That's an extremely slim chance. I haven't seen a single copy offered there in several months. Before that, I saw copies offered maybe 2 or 3 times, but only 1 of them was sealed.

I don't think you ever posted anything like that. And in fact it would be stupid to pay for an unauthorized copy.
