Alternative to Activesync?

Is there an alternative syncing program to Activesync?
The reason i ask is:

- deleted all my contacts/calendar on pocketPC
- connect to desktop with calendar/contacts that i wish to copy to my axim
- but what happens is that i end up with a nice empty contacts and calendar list on my desktop, which is not what i want!!

My ebookman had a better syncing program than this pile of crap. Is there a way to just copy calendar/contacts/tasks from either desktop->axim or axim -> desktop on user request?

Any help appreciated

Re: Alternative to Activesync?

boz,

I had the same problem with my Axim killing all of my contacts. It is because your Axim's PIM was updated last. In other words, ActiveSync thinks that you actually wanted to delete all of your contacts.

This is pretty stupid, but what I do is backup my PIM on my Axim before hard reseting it. Then when I am done I restore the data. This seems to make ActivSync happy.

This is kind of a pain, but this is how that stupid program works.

Oh, if your Axim crashes for some reason and you cant backup your PIM then I suggest that you backup your Contacts on your Desktop. You can archive them using Outlook or make a copy of the PST file that Outlook reads. To find out where it is right click on "Outlook Today." Then go to Properties -> Advanced and you should see a field that tells the filename and path to your PST file.

Copy this to a different location and when your Axim overwrites it you can overwrite it from your Desktop.

FYI: I have a program that backs up my PST too.

I hope this crazy work around helps. It really pi@@ed me off when I lost my Contacts. I was just lucky that I have a fairly recent backup of the PST. It is pretty optimistic to think that eveyone does this though.

thanks for the reply, yeah, my work around was to backup all my outlook stuff, sync empty PIM on axim with desktop which deltes all my outlook contacts/.. on my desktop, resore the Outlook stuff and then sync again with my axim. friggin dumb way of doing it man!

like i said, stupid piece of software which doesnt allow you complete freedom to choose which items you want to sync. you would think that microsoft with all of there budget would be able to come up with something like that!!! just boggles my mind that my ebookman had a better sync program!

three words: pocket backup plus. It lets you restore anything you want down to individual files if you want to.

bigdave240, so pocket backup plus allows you to sync outlook data between your pocket pc anyway you want irregardless of datestamp? i cant see on the web page anything about that,
if on the other hand it just does backups, then i have no problems with the backup utility that came with my dell.

you are right, it does not allow you to do that but if you try this program you will see how valuable it is. I will allow you to restore what you want to and not necessarily a full restore. If you get the plus version it will even backup your cards to your pc. ALSO it is very FAST!! It creates a .exe file on your PDA that can be executed without having the program so if you put it on the on board ram and have to do a reset you can just click on it and it will restore. If it is too big for the on board you can put it on your pc and drag it back to the pda should you need it and it will restore fast. I will not use the built in again. Sounds like i work for the company? Nah, just a very satisfied user.

You need to create a new partnership. If AS sees a new pertner, it uploads the stuff to the PPC Otherwise, it thinks that you wanted to delete all. AS needs the same funtionality as HotSync, modify the sync direction on a one time basis.
