nonsense , i've had my A05 wm2003 X5 for around 3 months and i think its great.....my last ppc was a tosh e540 ppc2002 with a 10min battery life, even my prehistoric jornada 548 was better than that tosh, so i'm extatic with the performance of my A05 wm2003 400mhz X5

I am happy with WM03 also. I still think we will see an OS upgrade for 04 when it comes around. I think it will be a better, more usable tool for remote email and instant messaging in the next go araound....maybe too good, so I am starting to play with email filters now to get more familiar with them.

Interesting read about MS thoughts of PPC into the future!
OK. I've now been running WM03 for a few more weeks.
I have since installed WisBar Advanced to get me around the Switcher problem. app!
I've stopped using Pocket Streets as I later found out that all of my PushPins have been reset and do not 'map' to the correct locations (no pun intended).
WisBar also does away with the need for me wanting Theme Switcher.
My resets are down to 1 a week (or so)
I refer y'all to my original post:

Arrrgghhh that explains why my WM2003 is sooo crap

All in all, I'm getting happier m'self and WM03 is growing on me ... fast

IF Dell decides to offer an upgrade, I doubt they'll offer one for the x5. They offered a Pocket PC 2003 upgrade, and that was very nice considering few other companies upgraded their old pocket pc's. I they offer an x5 upgrade for the 2004 edition, then that qualifies dell for sainthood!
To quote the MS Mobility guy - ever wonder why we have PDAs with 64MB of flash rom? The PocketPC spec is designed to ensure upgradability. That was the BIG screwup MS had with the original WinCE Handheld design - to upgrade it, you had to swap ROMs.
There's no compelling reason for Dell not to upgrade us to 2004 or 2005/6 as long as it fits into the same ROM space. The smaller 32MB space on the low end X5s still works because there are optional apps removed, so the ROM size is smaller...
Of course, they will charge for that - and that's perfectly ok.
Oh.. and of course, they'll announce it in June 2004 and we'll get it in November. :)
I would agree with the "change is bad" arguments posted if XP wasn't such a tremendous upgrade over 98 & ME when it comes to stability. Unless I'm doing something really really stupid with drivers, I've never had XP crash.

Actually the reason is very simple, cost. It's true that if the ROM can hold it and the platform can run it would seem all go, but that was also true for most of the Toshiba handhelds for which there were no updates offered. They would need to license the OS from Microsoft and then modify it with all of the approriate drivers and apps for the X5, but this isn't the bad part, the part that will cost them is all of the tech support they will need to offer to those who choose to upgrade. I'm guessing that the WM2003 fiasco probably ended up costing Dell a lot when you think about all of the time they had to devote to dealing with that and all of the X5's they had to take back from people who messed up when flashing as well as those who simply could in order to get a device with WM2003.
I don't know if they would want to open a can of worms like that for a product that will most likely have been discontinued when WM2004 comes out. I'd be impressed if they do though. I doubt that HP or Toshiba will be doing the same for the handhelds that were released around the same time the X5 was. I don't expect that an upgrade will be offered, but I'll hope for the best anyway.
I can only hope that if they fix any one single thing properly in 2004 that they fix the brain-dead storage driver so that it will recognize external IDE devices the way it's supposed to already out of the can but doesn't because the driver is picky.
viking99g, the problems do seem to be centered around wireless conectivity and some software that doesn't work with WM2K3. The software issue is to be expected as with any new OS. The wireless problems are truely vexing in because that's what WM2K3 is supposed to kick butt at.

If Dell don't offer upgrade's to wm04/05........ i'll be extremely pissed off. I've only had my x5 for 3 months and would hate to think we were being punished because of previous upgrade problems. Whats the point in installing 64mb rom for the OS and then not using it. surely someone out there has 'contacts' at dell. Lets just ask them !!!!
