I was just wondering if anyone knows if there will be a Pocket PC 2004. I'm still using 2002 and was wondering if I should upgrade now or just wait for the next round of upgrades.
Actually, from what I've heard WM2004 may not be as far off as you would think. I've read some reports indicating a release as early as the Summer of 2004. WM2003 was a stopgap release (sort of like Windows Me) WM2004 will apparently be a total overhaul of the OS. There are reports about it scattered within these boards and on other PDA sites like Brighthand. If you look around you should be able to find a bunch of info.
If you can make it through this holiday season without splurging on a gadget :) then I would recommend waiting a bit, that way you will have a better chance of getting a WM2004 compatible device that you will be able to upgrade when it does come out.
Oh sure, just sit on my hands...you might as well be asking me to jump over the moon. I'll keep looking. Thanks for the info. If you guys find anything more out, please let me know! Thanks! :-)

Man and I was looking at getting a big screen tv in February.
Man, total overhaul of the OS. They did that with XP. When will Microsoft learn? STOP CHANGING EVERYTHING IN EXISTENCE! I like consistancy. Whenever they change something they manage to mess it up real bad. Drives me insine! Although, nothing is perfect now. I do not see why they did not just release a service pack if 2003 was just a gap filler.
By the way, what makes you think the Axim X5 will not be able to handle it?
It was stated when WM2003 shipped that it was an interim solution to fix specific issues like connectivity being too complicated. The real update is the WM2004 which should be out mid-2004. Microsoft usually releases WMs every two years -PPC2000, PPC2002... WM2004 should have been the next one.
When the new pc and PPC os's come out the will apply a heavy use of certificates for security purposes. This will suposedly simplify corp. networks in the future as well as banking and other situations that REQUIRE security.

It's to early to say whether or not the X5 will run it. One thing that could be said though is that if the X5 can't handle it, neither can most of the other PPCs out there today. The bigger question is whether Dell will be inclined to offer an upgrade path to X5 users by the time WM2004 comes out, given that they will probably have a replacement for the X5 out by then. When I look back at all of the trouble the WM2003 upgrade created for them, I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to back away from opening that whole can of worms again.
If they want to keep a loyal customer base, they will. Look what hapened with Compaq aero, they said they "wouldn't bring out an upgrade", they had so many complaints that a new rom chip was out in a month.

Microsoft's OSs have been driving the user community's needs for hardware upgrades since Win9x came out. Either by minimum requirements or by incompatibly issues. And yet we all come back for more.....

For the desktop, if Linux was more widely supported I'd already have it. For the palmtop, if more hardware and software was available for palm os I'd probably also ditch ms for that one.
If there was more competition MS wouldn't dare pull the crud they pull, since our ball-less wonder US government has failed to properly spank them for anti-competitive practices and then failed to break them up as they should have, MS has no fear of continuing to do any old thing they wish.
The only reason we come back for more is that so far they're the only real game in town!

Arrrgghhh that explains why my WM2003 is sooo crap
Bought superb Axim in May - zero resets in that period, until...
Upgraded at start of November - 34 resets and counting..... !
The integration of Contacts with Pocket Streets SERIOUSLY messes with Switcher and I have to reset.
TomTom here I come...
Loss of the selectable Excel Template when creating a new spreadsheet (I have a few).
The lovely PocketCounter ... RIP
MS Theme Switcher ... ditto.
:pants:

Boards Don't Hit Back - Bruce Lee
If I may be so bold, why is WM2003 so bad? I still am using my WM2002 that I got when I bought my Axim, so I'm in the dark on WM2003. I suppose I have the advantage of not using any wireless internet with it, so I don't need much upgrading in the first place.
