Problem with Hotmail SMTP

Any other PPC 2003 users having a problem with Hotmail now that they've banned HTTP? I used to use HTTPMail provider from Adrian and it was great as it synced all my folders. Now I'm using pop3.live.com (which works) and smtp.live.com (which does not work). I've tried every combination of posts (25, 587) with SSL turned on and off with outgoing authetication turned on and off. I keep getting the same error message: "The message(s) could not be sent. Check that you have network coverage and that your account information is correct. Then try sending again."

I know my account settings are correct because I can receive e-mail. I tried using my cable company's smtp server (I'm connected to cable by Wifi, I'm using an HP iPaq 3715) and that actually worked. So there must be something specific about the live smtp server or the way I am trying to connect to it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This ought to be the correct settings:

smtp.live.com (port 25 or 587 (try 587 again))
Authentication: Yes
User: e-mail adress (as usual)
Pass: pass (as usual)
Encryption: SSL or TLS

DaLabrador,

Thanks for your suggestion but I already know the correct settings as I pointed out in my original post. The problem is that smtp.live.com "pushes" your outgoing mail onto your carrier's smtp server so your carrier can charge you for each outgoing mail. I'm not on a cell phone but a wifi connected standalone PDA (also as I stated in my original post) and my cable company does not accept the pushed e-mails so I end up with a "cannot send" error.

What I am looking for here is either an alternative to smtp.live.com that is portable (so I don't have to keep changing the smto server every time I go from home to work) or a way to force smtp.live.com to accept my outgoing mail.

I appreciate your intention to help.

Huh? I would like to think that they don't (because it sounds crazy), but of course I could be wrong (some people really are crazy).
I would like to think that your ISP(or router or even the next router in line) is blocking smtp ports for some reason (spam mail from spoofing clients comes to mind)

I would like to think that you need to check your router settings(you never know) or try port 587 again (I suggested it because port 25 is the most commonly blocked port), find another port that works with live.com (try 465, then 2525 and lastly 26) or complain to your ISP and see what they say. If nothing works you may have to use your ISP:s smtp server (They seem to be unwilling to let you send SMTP-stylee unless from their own servers).
You can, of course, try to send through a proxy outside of your ISP (your e-mail client will have to use some port other than 25 or 587).

If you absolutely _have_ to try other hotmailish smtp urls here's a list of other ones:
mail.hotmail.com
mx1.hotmail.com
mx2.hotmail.com
mx3.hotmail.com
mx4.hotmail.com

This is what the Windows Live Support team told me. It's so your cell phone carrier can charge you for outgoing e-mails if they want.

Port 25 is open on my router and service provider (it is used by other mail transports like Gmail). I tried 587 already but I did not try the others. Thanks for suggesting them. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Cool - I didn't know these. I'll try them for sure.

Ideally I would like to have something like the old HTTP - maybe someone can write a deltasync plug-in for WM2003se.

How craptastic. That's still crazy. (but not uncommon when dealing with companies from the 18th century)
Since you're not on a cell phone carrier (If I understand "cable" correctly) that shouldn't be an issue?
Perhaps they are blocking site specific traffic aswell?

If you can set up reading live mail from gmail you'd maybe be set for a while.

Please tell me how it works out. I need to know.
