No Javascript on PIE?
Hi,

When I tried to connect to my Netgear 814v2 router through PIE in WM 2003, I got this message:

"Setup requires JavaScript support...
Currently, your Browser doesn't support JavaScript...."

What's wrong with my PIE or WM 2003? I was able to connect to this very same router with the same firmware when WM 2002 was used. I thought it did support JavaScript. But why not now? Do I need to download anything to regain JavaScript capability with MW 2003?

TIA!

Ehien

Ditch Pocket PC and go back to Notebook?
Yeah, I can't do anything with my corporate email. (Lotus iNotes--over the Internet.) Needs Java to access the commands. I tried Netront 3.0 but it doesn't work either. All the web sites think it's Navigator 3.0 and tell me 4.0 or higher is required. Boy am I disappointed. Not just an Axim problem apparently. Unless someone at the Aximsite forums can help, it looks like I'll have to ditch the Axim (along with the whole Pocket PC idea) and go back to lugging around a notebook. I have Outlook there plus full versions of the Microsoft Office programs. I would gladly trade some of the other programs in the AX for a decent, up to date Browser. I will buy one if it will work but don't know of any. I saw that the new NEC handheld sub-note book using Windows CE has IE 6. If it has better versions than Pocket Word and Pocket Excel it is most likely the next one I'll get. Check it out in Pocket PC Mag.

Trick to fool PIE to be IE 5.5 (Might be slightly different in WM2003, but I know it works caus I have mine set this way):

Cool. Thanks. I'll try it out.

Why didn't I have problem with WM2002? I don't remember hacking anything except installing a PIE tool/utility from MS. My router never complained. But now with WM2003 it complains about no JavaScript support.

Sorry... have been too busy at work to report back. But I tried and it didn't work. I was able to fool a few web sites thinking I was using IE instead of PIE, but my router still complained that my brower didn't support JavaScript.

Any ideas? Really strange as I was able to connect to the same router (no firmware update since) with WM2002.

But I think my real problem is to enable JavaScript capability for my PIE. It appears that the web pages served by my wireless router do require JavaScript to run.

Can someone confirm if my PIE that came with WM2003 supports JavaScript or not? If it does, why my router complaied that it doesn't? If it doesn't, why didn't my router complaied when I used the PIE from WM2002?

But as other have said, the issue is Javascript, not the browser version. I don't have a solution for your router, but you could give Thunderhawk a go by bitstream. It renders pages on their server so most of the time Javascript isn't an issue.

Could be way off base here, so disregard if I am talking about something completely different ... but the reason Java VM wasn't included dates back to the lawsuit with MS and Sun Microsystem. They basically agreed after a certain date, believe was March 10, 2003, any further releases of their software would not include their release of Java VM. That is evident in W2K SP4 CD releases and W2003 Server, not sure about XP, but I expect the same in actual new media released since the lawsuit. That would explain why PPC2002 has Javascirpt and 2003 does not.

As for a solution, I am not aware of one, sorry.

Java and Javascript are two totally different things. Netscape formed an alliance with Sun Microsystems back in 1995. Java, a new object-oriented language and Netscape plans to support not only embedding Java applets, small programs that can live on a web page, but wishes the ability to script the applets as well. To accomplish this goal they came up with LiveScript. This was Javascript's first incarnation. It lasted all of about 6 months. In what some have called a pretty dumb move, Netscape decided to capitalize on the name recognition which Sun's new Java language was receiving. Thus LiveScript was renamed Javascript.

Of course, Javascript is neither the same as Java, nor vice-versa, however the confusion inevitable with naming the two different languages so closely has not really hampered their acceptance in the community at large.

Thanks to Dellguy and cageyjames for clearing things up. Now I finally understand what was going on- albeit a very bad news.

I never expected that going from WM2002 to WM2003 could cost me something like that (Javascript).

Looks like XP was affected at least later than WM. The notebook that I bought in Sept. came with XP that support Javascript (so I have no problem connecting to my router).

This is really a case of a stupid lawsuit affecting we consumers.

Oh well maybe I should hope for my router (Netgear) to provide updates to require no Javascript support.
