I am considering getting the WM2003 upgrade for my X5. My wife has a Viewsonic V37. Is the upgrade just a generic one that would work on hers too or do the manufacturers put specific things on it so it only works on their models?

My understanding is that the upgrades are model-specific. I would not recommend using the Dell X5 upgrade on any other machine. I believe that there is a warning to this effect somewhere in the upgrade packaging. Note that the upgrades come from the manufacturer, not from Microsoft.
