I notice that Pocket IE (WM2003, X5 basic) has some kind of memory leak.
After browsing for a while, I was forced to soft-reset the system since the amount of Free Program memory is too low. I never had this problem when browsing offline using avantgo. This problem only happens when I'm browsing online. At first I thought it might be the wlan driver. So, I tried the socket and the beta symbol drivers for my symbol card but they have the same problem (IE still leaks memory). Am I the only one who has this problem? Is there a solution? Is there another browser that does not leak memory? Oh... I forgot to mention that I hacked the registry so that IE stores it's temporary files in my SD Card. Hopefully this is not the cause of the memory leak.

Are you saying that the memory is taken by the cache (temporary internet files)?
I was thinking that IE leaks an additional amount of memory on top of the cache files. Even after I moved my cache location to my SD Card, I'm still losing memory while browsing. Closing IE (not just minimizing/hiding it) does not restore memory.

I usually experience this problem after heavy surfing. When I clear the cashe files my memory goes back to normal. I also use Pocket MEchanic to clean up all the other misc cashe and temp files. I am assuming that is the problem since everything goes back to normal. Could it be a memory leak I guess anything is possible.

I have the same problem. Pocket IE leaks. It is not cache, nor temporary internet files. Right now Pocket IE is the only program running and I am using 16.63MB of program memory. I kill Pocket IE and now I have 9.91 MB in use program memory with no programs running. Now I do a soft reset and I have 6.41 MB in use program memory. Now I launch Pocket IE and I have 7.226 MB in use program memory.

Hmmm...
I'm wondering how widespread the problem is. If majority of us are experiencing the problem, we should let Dell know and hopefully it can be fixed. May be Chris could help us to get the appropriate Dell contact. Anybody know if this is a Dell specific problem or pocket IE problem?

Ya IE leaks for me too but i have Power Clean from battery pack and i have it clean my Temporary files and Temporary Internet files every hour while my x3i is on. I have deleted 4MBs at times but it is either Temporary files or Temporary Internet files that IE leaks into.

I believe I have seen a similar thread around here on this issue. I recall there was a regisry hack for moving the pie files to SD or CF but i dont remeber the actual thread on this but it is a MS/Dell problem...meaning niether will step up and accept the blame for nor at the time did either say that they would workon it. I do remeber that much... I think i was at Brighthand when i read that.

I moved my temporary Internet files to my SD card when I first got my Axim. It slowed down PIE to a crawl, because writing to the SD card is much slower than writing to RAM. I switched it back. Since web surfing is one of my primary activities with my Axim, the performance hit is not worth it for me.
If you kill the PIE process, does it free up the memory, or do you have to do a soft reset to get it back? If it's just the cache, why not set a smaller maximum cache size?

If it is an actuall leak in the program itslf then yes killing the process that is eat at it will let go of that memory. But if it is the tampering with the regisry to place the files on SD card and not all the pics and spacers and other html junk is making it to the sd card then it is going to pile up on the RAM therefore eating memory up like a two year old in the cookie jar.

Killing the pie process (by shutting it down in the Running Programs) does not restore the memory.
Only soft-resetting the device will restore the available memory. Soft-resetting shouldn't clear pie cache. So, it's unlikely that it's a caching (or cache location) problem.

you are thinking in terms of cache
if it is a memory leak then there is no cache it is just eating up memory in random bits and pieces
