Well about a week ago i tried to access an internet page-right after i clicked the "go" button it said "the page cannot be found". I was connecting to the internet via Dial-Up CF Modem and i know i was connected because i could log on MSN Messenger. I also tried to access any internet page while connected to my computer, but it still said "the page cannot be found"; there again i knew was connected. I can still access AdvantGo. But the wierd thing is that when i'm not connected to anything, and i try to go to a website, it says "the page cannot be found", it usually says, cannot connect. What is wrong with PIE? I know it is not my connection.
PS: I also backed-up my system then did a hard reset and then restored, and the problem still remained. ![]()

This is the most annoying, dirtiest little PIE secret out there. I've been plagued by this at times whether connected via Wi-Fi or cell modem, whether using using WEP or not. Some have suggested its tied to IP conflicts and to release/renew but that doesn't seem to work either.
There is no rhyme or reason why it kicks in, often during a session of sucessful internet browsing, but when it does, you are F'ed. Most of the time, a soft reset works, maybe a router reboot, othertimes nothing will work except time. I've never gotten a consistent reason or cure for it and its rarely discussed. My kingdom for a solution!!!

I'm pretty sure this is a DNS issue.
You might want to install a network utility like vxutil and try pinging when you get this problem. No ping suggests DNS issue. If so, try connecting to the IP address directly. If that works, it's definately DNS troubles.

While connected with your ISP, open vxUtil, tap Function, Ping...
In the top box, type the name of a website, such as google.com and tap "Ping." If the Ping is successful, it will respond with something like: Quote:
If you get 100% bad, try typing in 216.239.39.99 This is the IP number for google. If you get good responses using the IP, then it suggest the domain names are not being resolved.

Thank you very much for this!!
Assuming the connection is OK but the DNS is screwed up, is there any work around to restore it back to normal? I guess I could get the ip address of the sites I need most frequently, but there has to be a better way. You are a god if you can figure this out. Many thanks

I don’t know. How do you have the Connection Settings? Generally these work best on LAN connections if they are all set to “Work Settings” but I was under the impression with dial-up one or more should be set as “The Internet.” My only suggestion is to try changing them.
Anyone else have any other suggestions?

O.K., you pinged google and it was successful, so can you browse the google site?
(You never really said whether your completely not able to access the web or selectively not able to, there is a big difference) Quote:
