If I want the full long distance string to be dialed (I use Ilium Software PhoneTone to tone-dial my landline phone from the X5), I just add a + sign before the 1 long distance prefix. So a phone number which needs the full string looks like this when I enter a new one:
+1 234 567 8910
My default area code is 604, and the brackets which make this default to (604) make no difference in my area's required 10-digit dialing.
When I write a number on a piece of paper, I write it as 123 456 7890, no hyphens, no brackets. The spaces are sufficient, really. So yes, it bugs me that there are brackets, and also that if I enter a 1 without the + sign the one automagically vanishes, every time. But I'm used to it. Not very elegant, but workable, once one gets used to the workaround.
