Need to Restore a Backup

Getting frustrated, here's the deal. Digitizer broke on my AXIM5 and I traded it off & bought another AXIM5. The new one had PPC 2002 so I upgraded to WM2003 because the old one was running that. Prior to getting rid of the old AXIM, I did a backup via Activesync. The upgrade went fine, but I cannot establish a partnership with the new AXIM. The wizard keeps coming up and no matter what option I try (standard or guest) activesync stops responding in about 5 seconds. Any ideas on steps needed to get the AXIM connected to see if I can restore the backup?

One other thought I had - I have an SD card with a fairly old backup on it and was wondering if I could apply that to the AXIM, then be able to sync. Not sure if a backup in the SD card would have the partnership data on it.

Another way to view it is like this - I have an AXIM running WM2003 with no partnership established. On my laptop I have the partnership and backup from the old AXIM (also was running WM2003). How do I establish the same partnership & restore the AXIM?

Thanks

OK, a little progress, seems it's just taking an awful long time to connect. I let it sync as a guest (I thought) and only checked tasks so it didn't have much to do. When I try to restore it says the backup file is not valid and to pick another file. However it does not give me an option to pick a file. I know where the backup file is, but cannot direct to it.

I think part of the problem is the partnership name. Let's say the partnership I'm currently using is XXX. The old one is YYY. I do not see how I get to connect as YYY. Seems I am missing something.

Still need some advice. I managed to delete the unneeded partnerships, chose my old partnership name, and was able to restore the backup. The problem is that now when I connect under the old partnership name it goes right to thepartnership wizard. Can'r figure out why it won't let me sync.

If you deleted all your partnerships, you will need to go through the AS setup wizard to establish a new partnership with your new Axim. Just run it and you should be able to sync.

I deleted partnerships that I had made in attempts to sync. I successfully restored the backup. Without the AXIM connected I get the right partnership name on top, but when I connect it ignores it and goes right to the AS wizard. The wizard will not let me use the name of a partnership that exists. I have all the data from the backup restored, it just will not allow me to sync now.

Try renaming your device and then estabish a brand new partnership using the wizard. To rename, go to Start--> Settings ---> System ---> About ---> Device ID (tab).

Thanks, I am on my way out & will try that tonite. The only question is, by renaminging it do I stand a chance of losing all my info? I am kind of confused since I have all the stuff from the old partnership on my PC.

Nope, you won't lose your info. I have renamed my Axim many times! :) (Besides, if you're really worried, you still have your backup right?)

Thank you Gigi, finally got it synced. But I see a problem. Since I restored from a backup, I do not see the installed programs when I try to go to Remove programs. I had an AXIM with 64 meg and this one has 32 meg, almost out of memory. I need to reinstall some apps to the CF card tosave memory. Unfortunately cannot do that if they don't show.

Guess I am going to install the WM2003 upgrade again to clean everything out then reinstall apps. Thanks for that link on installing programs, it will be real helpful to me.

One thing you might want to try is to reinstall the programs into the same location, and then uninstall them. Reinstalling them may recreate the shortcuts/links/registry entries you need to go to Remove Programs to do a complete and proper uninstall.

Well, I could not uninstall via AS and the link for Remover went to what looked like a Russian site. I decided to put the old ROM back, then reinstall WM2003 and go with clean installs of the programs to the CF card. Was actually quite painles and probably should have taken this route first

Anyway am back up and running. Thanks again for the assistance and patience.
