No Axim Internet Access after ROM/WM2003 Update
Hi All,

I hate to ask this, but could someone spell out exactly how to give my Axim - now with gorgeous WM2003 - access to the Internet through my PC's cable internet connection? Is there a resource somewhere that I have missed (I checked this forum thoroughly, and Microsoft's useless site)?

I just updated my Axim to WM2003 (ROM A05) and while it is beautiful and fun (and working), I now cannot get to the Internet for updating my Journal Bar, etc.

ActiveSync does its synch job very well, but I can't get to the Internet using the USB cradle....I had Internet with PPC2002 (I was not ever sharing my connection, as some users have suggested to do in the forum, and that doesn't work anyway for me). I am sure the solution is simple, it just has eluded me for several hours.

In ActiveSync: Pass-through is activated (this PC connects to: INTERNET, though I also did "WORK"), Detect Ethernet/RAS is activated, even the annoying "start ActiveSync when connected" is activated. And several reboots...

On Axim: All is set to Work. I tried VPNs etc, nothing. It always wants a modem, etc.

I am sure I am doing something wrong. Please help!

You should know that Wifi is just around the corner for my Axim, but I want to solve this problem first.

Update - Skype.com works???
Hi again...

If anyone has any clue about this, I would really appreciate your advice.

I am using the utilities at www.cam.com, which are helpful, but I can't change any addresses, or really do anything. Although DHCP is activated on my laptop PC, the Axim says it is not active.

BUT, Skype works! It is totally wierd...i cannot access anything else on the internet from my Axim, nothing, but Skype (PPC version, only works on WM2003), lets me add users, search for them, call them, etc. Why???

This latest development really confuses me...thanks for any help!

UPDATE - Can connect to IP addresses...
Hi again

I seem to be coming to some sort of answer...I read Ikehiker's response of 8/30/03 : he asked if the person could connect to an IP address. Well, I can do that. So why can I NOT connect to domains that have name based hosting (www.google.com), and only connect to IP addresses I type in (216.239.39.99)?

I googled all this, and I can only find a limited number of help articles that seem to indicate that my problem lies with my DNS. My Axim has disabled DHCP resolution (i guess you can't do DHCP over the USB cradle?), I don't think I can change DNS entries on my Axim (where? I have vxIPConfig, but I can't change the entries), so it doesn't seem like I can actually CHANGE any entries on my Axim, and I don't know how to configure Nat32 to make it see the Axim - though I have tried. Oh, have I tried.

I should say that I have probably no idea what I am talking about or what I am doing. Please help, someone..?

Thanks in advance...

Rich

vxConfig give me:

USB Cable: (this is my only choice on the drop down list)

Adapter Address: all zeros
IP Address: 192.168.55.101
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.55.100
DHCP: Nothin
Primary Wins: Nothin
Seconday Wins: Nothin
Lease Obtained: DHCP Disabled
Lease Expires: DHCP Disabled

You will probably find that wifi works better. Go ahead and set up wifi. I think you will like it. Most people prefer wifi syncing.

Thanks Nancy...I will need to do that when I get back to the states later this summer. The Linksys 2.4 GHz CF Wifi card is 129 euros (about 150 bucks!!) here in Paris, in the only store I could find it, the FNAC, and I just can't pay that much when I know I can find it in the states for between 50 and 80 dollars - it's even only 50 pounds in the UK (75 bucks!). So..I'm going to wait.

But, Ikehiker had suggested to enter my ISP's DNS entries into my Axim...do you have any suggestions about that?

Thank you so much for you advice though...

You are correct about the price of wifi cards. Probably many souces online for purchase will even beat the price in stores. Ikehiker is our resident expert on wifi and internet connection, so I would value his suggestions.

Now that SKYPEOUT is out, I guess I'll do the uprade to 2003 on my X5 but I'd sure like to know that I am not going backwards. ie that I'm not asking for a lot of problems. Does the upgrade go smoothly?? Will my WiFi continue to work well with my truemobile card?? Would IkeHiker recommend it?? Skype sez that it's next upgrade for PPC will contain Skypeout. This will be the first and only VOIP to regular commercial phone for Dell Pda's. Can't wait!

My upgrade went very smoothly and my wifi works flawlessly on my X5. Maybe someone else would tell you differently, but I am happy that I upgraded.
