I was able to change the name. But when I set up a new partnership with that name it says, "The device name is already in use. You must enter a different device name for your mobile device".

What should I do?

Don't set up a new partnership. Use the existing one.

I don't understand what you mean by "backup file".
When you connect the PPC it synchronizes the contacts, calendar, notes, etc. There is no "backup file" involved in this process.

Dont you have all your contacts in outlook on the desktop?

What as77 is saying, is that when you setup a new partnership
AS should sync all your exsisting OL contacts to your new pda.

I need to back up the data via the back up file. I dont have any of my contacts, calender, mail, tasks, or mail in outlook. Therefore I only have a file that was created with the Axim (which I dont have anymore) backup program. Its sitting on my computer desktop but I cant access it.

Also, I am trying to connect via active sync using the existing partnership, so I am just naming it by the dafault name (Pocket_PC) and thats where I get the error message I wrote above.

Does any of this make any sense?

I found this:

""Restore cannot be completed successfully. The selected backup file was created from a different type of mobile device." - You'll see this under a couple of circumstances: either you've recently done a software upgrade (a new release of the operating system / ROM upgrade) and are trying to restore a backup that applies to the older software operating system. More commonly, you'll see this after having reset your machine, and the device is set to a different region to the region in use when it was backed up (it defaults to US English). Go to 'Settings | System | Regional settings', and switch to the appropriate language. "

This is the exact message I get.

But my regional settings are OK and I havent upgraded anything.

I was able, I dont know how, to retreive the information from PocketMoney. I am clueless as to how I did this but it worked. Now if I could just get my contacts . . .

In AS delete "that" device name. Then put back your Axim on the cradle and re-establish partnership now using "that" same device name. Hopefully, sync eventually happens!

Hey nZo

I tried this with the Ipaq. Like I said before, my Axim is long gone. But I tried what you said and I get an error message saying

"The device name is already in use. You must enter a different device name for your mobile device".

What should I do?

I don't think it's going to work. Apparently the X3i and the Ipaq are too different, even though they have the same type of processor. You should have synchronized with Outlook.
