Mayday, Mayday please tell me it isnt so . . .
Here is the story:

I had a Dell X3i that I returned for a full refund because a hardware malfunction. So after being completely fed up with Dell I decided to purchase an HP 4155.

BUT before I sent the Axim I made a full backup of all my info.

Today I received my new Ipaq and tried to restore the information and I get an error message saying that the device cannot restore because its not the same product!

I am here in my office flipping out!!

They both run off the same windows program.
They both syncronize with the same program.
They are both pocket pc's where backups and restore are available.
But are you able to restore data from one unit to another . . . NO!

I spoke to HP tech support and he mentioned that this is true even if you purchase a new IPAQ. I dont understand!

Please help. Does anyone know of a way to backup data from a Axim file to a new HP??

How did you make that backup?
If you synchronized with Activesync you should be able to synchronize the Ipaq and get your data on it this way.

This is exactly what I did.

I used activesync to make a backup file which is now sitting on my desktop.

So I just set up a guest partnership and tried to restore the backup and wont work!

This should be possible, I dont see why it doesnt work...
its worked for axim to axim for me.. many times..

Did you do your backup through ActiveSync?
if you did you can at least access your files in the backup file with this freeware:

Try setting up a normal partnership then try the restore again?

I've never actually used AS backup on a regular basis, but thats
something I would try...

First of all
silentnight thanks for the link. Its useful but is there something similar but able to view contacts and calender info?

Second I did try to do a restore from a guest partnership as well as with a standard one. But niether work.
I get an error message saying that, "The file cannot be completed successfully. The selected backup file was created from a different type of mobile device."

Nothing seems to work

Could be wrong on that one but I belive that backups take an image of your ROM and RAM and 'simply' burns them back to the chips when you do a restore.

Different devices probably have different types of memory and different adressing that would prevent exchanging backups from one another.

ok, another idea.... hehe

Open your backup in STG Viewer
copy out the \Databases\ folder...

then do an AS backup of your new pda....
Open the new STG file in the STG Viewer, then import
the \databases\ that you copied out of the other backup...

Then restore back to your ipaq.

I cant try this while im at work, ... let me know if it works...

A) how do I change the device ID on my new Ipaq?

B) what do you mean by "restore from the old axim folder"?
