I did try to flash the OS image onto the Axim using the bootloader but the bootloader rejected it, saying that this is not an Axim X5 image.
The Toshiba installation procedure requires installing a new bootloader. That is something I don't want to do because it is extremely risky. So I gave up at this point.

I also highly doubt it that he actually did it. Although if he just went ahead and installed the bootloader unknowingly of the high risk involved, it's not entirely impossible that it worked. But I'll wait until someone who doesn't mind losing his/her Axim gives it a try.

I don't know enough about how the hardware works to say, but would it make sense that if in two different devices the hardware was all wired the same way, the same rom image would work? I don't know about how the main processor handles different busses and IOs and all that great stuff, but if there's only one way to hook a mediaq chip to the processor, and only one way to hook all of the rest of the stuff to the mediaq chip, then it couldn't it work?

I'd imagine though that every company does the implementation differently enough (e.g. dell might hook the CF to "port 1" on the chip and toshiba might put it on "port 2") to prevent it from working. Unless they both used the reference model or something? I dunno.

I'm a n00b...is there a way to get a copy of the Dell bootloader and install it if and when it doesn't work? Or is it hardwired or something? I don't know anything about PPC architecture.

I'm afraid you need a working bootloader in order to install another bootloader, so if the bootloader doesn't work, you can kiss your PPC goodbye...

OK heres the deal - I am just interested in this to see if it actually works. I'm not interested in landscape mode on my X5 cos I aint found a use for it myself.

BUT I do have a spare X% with a slightly broken digitiser and I would be prepared to attempt replacing the boot loader and Rom image on it - but I'm not bothered enough to search for it (I am on a dial up modem) So if someone would email me the links to where I can getboth of these items I will download them and give them a try and let you lot know for once and all.

x30 and x3i are very similar, it should be possible to hack 2003se to an x3, but I dont know for x5, I'd pay to see it happen. My warranty is expired anyway. I doubt you can use a toshiba one on axim

v2drinkers,

The upgrade for the Toshiba e800 can be downloaded from http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...d=513363&ct=DL
The documentation explains how to install it: first the boot ROM, then the OS itself.
Good luck!
