With the assistance of the people at Orange I got my x30 to get a GPRS connection through my phone (a moto MPx200) over the IR port. A bit of a juggling act, but so far so adequate.

Check a bit of email, do a token bit of surfing, mess around with where you put the IR port, then log it off.

Now every time I open it up, including while I'm trying to make a quick note (sorry, ma'am, what did you say your address was?), it's popping up the login screen for the GPRS connection.

Fine. Click Calligrapher out of the way and click cancel.

Oops! Popped up again. Click cancel. And again and again. Four times before it gets the hint.

Now, the settings for this are a bit fiddly. The extra dial string is +cgdcont=1,"IP","orangeinternet", and if I delete the profile I'll NEVER remember all that stuff.

So how do I get it to dial the GPRS connection ONLY when I want it to?
