Question Dumb Question about PPC OS Software

Ok so I am looking to get a PPC....just in time for the X50 I guess....my question is this...since the operating system that will most likely ship with the X50 is a year or so old, when the next edition of the MS Mobile PPC OS comes out, can you upgrade your exisiting PPC to that newer OS?

Also, if so, how is that done? Is it it a pain in the rump to do?

Thanks...sorry for the newbee questions.

WM2003se is not a year old.. it just came out a few months ago.

Also it depends on Dell, if they want to release an upgrade they will, if not then they wont.

They did not release an upgrade for the X3i's .. to upgrade to Wm2003se.

the main reason for upgradeabilty is for rom upgrades of the same OS, for bug fixes etc..

Why are you so worried about having the latest and greatest OS? WM2003SE just came out with the X30. Not a hge difference compared to WM2003.

I have an X5 and I can not upgrade to WM2003SE. If the X50 comes out with a new OS than you will have the latest and greatest otherwise you will have the WM2003SE, which will be the newest OS for WM available.

If a new version is released, it's hard to say wether or nat and upgrade will definately be available, but if it comes out shortly after the X50's release, I am sure the likelyhood of getting the upgrade for your X50 will be pretty good.

I am not worried about, I just was wondering....I am new to the PPC world and I was just wondering if they are like personal computers where you could go out and buy the next version of the OS and install it yourself. Thats all I wanted to know.

I think that by the time the next OS comes out, Dell will release another new PPC, therefore they won't provide an upgrade for the X50. Their goal is that everybody just dumps their "old" PPCs and buys a new one for $300-$400 every year.

The newest operating system is not always so great. Here's a cautionary tale.

Whenever Microsoft rush out a Second Edition (SE) version it's a sure sign that they cocked-up something in the original release.
And so it is with WM2003 & WM2003SE.

Now I have an X5 which originally came with WM2002, and everything was hunky-dorey.
Then I upgraded to WM2003, mainly because it's version of IE was supposed to be better. But MS Reader didn't work so I had to download a fixed version . MSN Messenger also didn't work so I had to download a patch for that. And then I discovered that the OS had a bug that left duplicate notifications in the registry which would eventually grind the system to a snails pace. So I had to download a utility to clear out the duplicates, and I still have to remember to run it periodically. But where Microsoft really screwed-up is in introducing a bug that results in alarms/reminders intermittantly failing to wake-up the device. In other words, your 6am wake-up call doesn't happen and you miss your flight. As far as I know there is still no fix for this problem. The alarm function is obviously one of the most useful features of a PDA so this fault has to fall into the category of a MEGA cock-up, and is, I believe, the reason that MS rushed out WM2003SE.

Now Dell are not providing a WM2003SE upgrade for the X5 so I am persevering with WM2003 for the moment, but I have seriously considered reverting back to WM2002 and may well do so in the future, depending on how many other WM2003 bugs surface.

So, don't get hung-up on having the newest OS. Never underestimate Microsoft's capacity to screw things up.
