The newest operating system is not always so great. Here's a cautionary tale.
Whenever Microsoft rush out a Second Edition (SE) version it's a sure sign that they cocked-up something in the original release.
And so it is with WM2003 & WM2003SE.
Now I have an X5 which originally came with WM2002, and everything was hunky-dorey.
Then I upgraded to WM2003, mainly because it's version of IE was supposed to be better. But MS Reader didn't work so I had to download a fixed version . MSN Messenger also didn't work so I had to download a patch for that. And then I discovered that the OS had a bug that left duplicate notifications in the registry which would eventually grind the system to a snails pace. So I had to download a utility to clear out the duplicates, and I still have to remember to run it periodically. But where Microsoft really screwed-up is in introducing a bug that results in alarms/reminders intermittantly failing to wake-up the device. In other words, your 6am wake-up call doesn't happen and you miss your flight. As far as I know there is still no fix for this problem. The alarm function is obviously one of the most useful features of a PDA so this fault has to fall into the category of a MEGA cock-up, and is, I believe, the reason that MS rushed out WM2003SE.
Now Dell are not providing a WM2003SE upgrade for the X5 so I am persevering with WM2003 for the moment, but I have seriously considered reverting back to WM2002 and may well do so in the future, depending on how many other WM2003 bugs surface.
So, don't get hung-up on having the newest OS. Never underestimate Microsoft's capacity to screw things up.
