ActiveSync Multiple Partnerships

I used to sync my Axim with my old PC, now broken. Now that I have a new PC I want to sync there instead. When I tried to set up a new partnership with the PC, it asks if this will be the only computer I'm synchronizing with.

It says that if I say "yes" it will delete my existing partnership(s). I'm not sure I want to do that.

If I say "no, I want to synchronize with two computers", it tells me that the Axim already HAS two partnerships, and one has to be deleted first! I don't remember adding a second partnership; besides, they have the same name!

Am I forced to lose one or both partnerships? If so, what would I lose? And how can I tell what the difference between the two exising partnerships?

My suggestion is to go along with the above. If you have moved over all of your Outlook data, just say "yes" and tell it to overwrite all of the data on your Pocket PC with the data from your desktop computer.

The partnership in ActiveSync only stores replication data and any backups made via ActiveSync (files synced are stored in a different location) - it doesn't store any data itself.

I'm not sure I follow you -- and not just because I don't use Outlook.

My new PC doesn't have any of my files (either regular synchronized files or backups) that are on the Axim. If I delete the partnership, will these files be deleted from the Axim?

Just to be safe, can I first sign on with a Guest partnership and back up the Axim before deleting the regular partnership?

No files will be deleted from the Axim. And you can use the Guest account to move files back and forth as a precaution - just go into ActiveSync's Explore and copy all the files to your desktop.

I've done the above on multiple Pocket PC units - deleting the partnership, re-creating, performing a hard reset and deleting the old partnership then recreating a new partnership with the same name - and all my files are just fine. If you do file sync and delete the partnership, be sure to tell it to NOT delete your file sync folder in My Documents.
