Newsreader compatibility.
So I recently bought an Axim x50v. While the choice of handheld shows I wanted more capability, the main reason was to work on school from anywhere at anytime - I attend the University of Phoenix online.
I started looking for newsreaders for the unit and trying them out - and every one failed to work. The readers can connect online and browse the web with no problem, so it isn't connectivity (either 802 or cradled). I started looking for some advanced configuration information for UoP as I then figured it may be on their servers. Here is the only relevant looking thing I found:
I have a problem trying to setup Linux to access the servers at the University of Phoenix. The servers (Microsoft IIS) require a "log on using Secure Password Authentication" under Microsoft Outlook Express. I understand that this requires a email and news reader to authenticate using the WindowsNT Challenge/Response (NTCR) protocol [a really bad use of the http protocol]. The school does have a website to get to the email and news groups but it is timed and is very particular and seems to like rejecting Netscape Navigator access. The UOP Tech group's pat answer is that they only support Outlook Express under Windows, I want a Linux answer.
So, what it looks like to me is that the authentication method required by the UoP servers is not availible in the current newsreader offerings for Windows Mobile 2003 SE. I could be wrong, but I tried about 5 or 6 newsreaders (not that many avaible from what I've seen) and had no luck.
A work-around I thought of trying was synching MS Outlook Express with the unit, but I can't find a synch tool that will do the newsreader, only email and contacts.
So, this is where I am at. I can read and write, but the newsgroup functionality would be basically primo as writing a reply to a discussion thread is more suited to the doctors office wait then working on a term paper is.
Any thought, ideas, or suggestions? I'm really not at a point in knowledge/ability/time to write my own newsreader that would work...
