I'm a bit embarrased to ask this question here but have no other choice...
Can anyone tell me why when I try to select a folder or file to open in File Explorer or Notes program the selected entry is highlighted but would not open...?

Don't be embarrassed to ask a question here...I'm sure there are others who are wondering the same thing...

Anyway, have you tried double tapping on the file/folder name to open it?

...but double tap the icon. If you doubletap the name it may just go to rename/edit.

...doulbe tapping has the same effect as single tapping which is flipping between highlighted/unhighlighted states of the entry (regardless if I tap the name or the icon).
If I hold it down it only pops up the context menu...

What kind of files/folders are you trying to open?

Any folder within the File Manager Explorer (Windows, Program Files, Application etc.)...

I can't tell you why it happens, but I can tell you you're not alone. The same thing happens to me from time to time and it's not just in relation to one program. Once it starts, clicking on a name in contacts doesn't open it, clicking on an mp3, word document or note in file explorer doesn't open it. I can open them with Rescoe using the drop down menu, but that's it.

I assume it's because of some third-party software I've installed. I do a lot of messing around, so it would be hard for me to isolate the problem.

My solution has always been to do a soft reset. It goes right back to working normally once I do it. That's a good enough work-around for me.

Let us know if you figure out a better solution.

I've also experienced this, but with Tasks - they just select when tapped and will not open. In fact came here to find out why :) I had to do a hard reset to fix it and then resynch. Would love to know why it happens.

I have this problem affect me in messaging, where all of a sudden one email gets highlighted and I can't deselect it. If I double-tap on a different email, it opens the highlighted one, not the one I clicked on. Soft reset solves it, but it happens almost every time I download new messages. Annoying!
