WMP10 sync with WM2003SE via WiFi
Hi guys,
I'm not sure how many of you are using the Sync capabilities in Windows Media Player 10 (WMP10) yet, but using my cradle (X30h) it is very slow to transfer 600mb worth of wma music to an SD card.
So I thought, wouldn't it be great if it could be synced over WiFi! No, I'm not talking about ActiveSync via WiFi (so you aren't confused).
I can't seem to find much information on this subject, so I've started asking around (this forum being one place).
Has anyone set it up or know of how to set it up?
Thanks guys.

Welcome to the site!!
Have you thought of getting a USB card reader to transfer the files? This would be faster than trying to transfer them through a wifi connection.

Well, thats what I have been doing until I found out WMP10's sync functionality... Plug it it and it updates your pda's music collection. I'd like WMP10 to do it for me rather than me deleting and adding my music manually.

I think you will find it too slow anyway. Try copying a few files over wireless using explorer and see if you like it?
I suppose the only advantage of using WMP10 is if you want to re-encode the files to a lower bitrate for the pocket pc to save space.
Personally I like to use MP3 files at 192k and I don't like the WMA versions produced by WMP when it copies over, plus I have to wait for conversion....
Good luck anyway

Well, I tested out transfer speeds using different methods:
- explorer
- wmp10
- a usb2.0 card reader
There is barely any speed difference using WMP10 and explorer. The USB2.0 solution was the fastest (possibly because the cradle is USB1.1, you would assume anyway).
I acutally disabled the conversion feature when syncing via WMP10 because all my wma files are 64-96kbps. I can't see a reason to convert it lower.
I'm starting to doubt WiFi's ability to transfer faster. Would be a nice feature tho, walking within range of the host computer and having the list sync automatically.

Wifi Sync of Media Player
Timothy:
Thanks for asking this question, I was jsut trying to do the same thing, and I am more challenged in not having and SD card reader in my machine at home or work. I was hopeful on the wireless sync because I have over 45 GB of music at home(yes, way too much music;)) of various flavors and I liked the idea of a random selection from the library. Pain in the butt to manually pick and drag, and I the dock at work and wifi at home. BTW, neither machine has a USB 2.0 port, just the old ones:(. If somebody comes up with a way to do wireless MP10 sync, I will be happy to learn it, regardless of the 'slow' transfer speed. Worst case is I will have to pick up a travel sync cable and use that so WMP recognizes my Axim when docked.

I've attempted to do the same thing however without much luck. I like WMP10 because it also will encode the Video and dump it onto my PPC. I always sync wifi however when i want to sync music i have to connect it.
I prefer to have several playlists and I only sync what I'm in the mood for (usually not more than 4 hours of music at 128k or 160k. This is a very big downfall for me that WMP does not recognize my PDA as a compatible device over wifi or Bluetooth. I hope the next version will take care of that.

WMP10 can sync your music through a card reader - as long as your PC sees it as a "USB Mass Storage Device". Since most MP3 players show up as the same thing in Windows, the sync capability is there.
All you have to do is go into the Options of WMP10 on your PC and select your card reader (when it shows up as an extra drive, like G: ) to set sync options. This drops a WMPInfo.xml file onto the root of the memory card, and a matching entry in your PC's registry. Now, whenever you connect the card through your card reader, the music should sync on your settings.
There is realistically no benefit to syncing onto a storage card THROUGH ActiveSync, if you have a card reader. Even the lucky few of us with WMP10 Mobile can still get album art synced if we use ActiveSync the first time, and then switch to using a card reader.
Why don't PPC makers bring their cradles up to USB 2.0 speeds, instead of this old serial crap? Sacrificing a devices ability to sync through a hardware COM port seems worthwhile in the new millenium!

Great Suggestion
I have a Hitachi 4GB CF microdrive (which I love) and have been very frustrated by the USB 1.1 standard.
Inspired by your suggestion, I tried starting a sync process through the cradle and than stopping it once the file index had been created.
I then put the microdrive into a reader, and WMP10 immediately recognized it and begin syncing many times faster than it had through the cradle.
Thanks for the great suggestion. Now, if we could just get USB 2.0 standard on these things . . .

Hi guys,
I found the main reason why my USB syncing was so slow. I have posted in another thread, here.
