How to leave mail on server
We have an axim x50 and in our office. In our offcice we have all the computers on our peer to peer network set to leave the email messages on the ISP's server. One is set to remove them after 5 days. But the X50 when it syncs with the computer it's cradle is connected to takes the emails off of the server every time.

How do I set it leave the messages? I don't have the manual here now. Hopefully it's something easy to set. The X50 is the bosses, so I am not really familiar with it. He has only had it for a couple of weeks, so none of us are really familiar with it. We just figured out that it appears to be the reason our emails are disappearing.

TIA,

Jim

Sorry, I meant how to do it in the x50. We have it figured out in Outlook. I didn't think the x50 was downloading from the ISP, just from the computer it is connected to. But I guess it takes it from the ISP. That is unless I haven't figured this out right yet. When it was recently reconnected all the emails disappeared. So I don't think it was just a coincidence.

Thanks for the reply,

Jim

I've had the same problem when I connect to my home wireless router and am using the x50v to just send an e-mail. I decided to not sync my messages with outlook on my computers, and found that it went ahead and downloaded messages when I had the wireless enabled. That locked up my AVG e-mail check when I cradled the unit. It didn't stop until I uncradled, deleted all the messages and then everything worked fine. I routed around in pocket outlook and couldn't find anything to stop clearing off the messages as I've setup in Outlook. So if anyone has an answer, I would be interested too.

I don't recall seeing a setting. In fact, I just flipped through the screens of setting up an account and didn't see anything. I use a POP3 server for email, and from day one out of the box, it has left the messages on the server.

Are you sure that it couldn't have been anything else? Have you tried it with a test message to see if it stays once pulled in?

Actually, I just re-read your message. I use mine to check the server through a wireless network. It sounds like you are dropping the Axim in the cradle. Are you pulling email straight in to the Axim from an internet connection, OR are you getting email into the Axim by synching with Outlook on the PC?

bmurphy - Are you using a POP3 server to get your messages through the WLAN?

For what it is worth - I do not synch my email when cradled either. I use my Axim as a standalone unit for sending and receiving email. I have a separate email address that is only used by my Axim.

[quote=kjmcglinch]Are you sure that it couldn't have been anything else? [/QUOTE

I sent a test message and we all got it on the network. It stayed on the server and then some other email showed up. I had the server emails showing in my mail program. As soon as the boss came back and put the Axim in the cradle and it synced, the messages were gone from the server. So I am quite sure that is what is happening.

I checked the Axim and there are no accounts set up. So it doesn't connect to the ISP to download the email. It is just that when it syncs with Outlook, they are being deleted from the server.

I guess until we figure this out maybe I will have to have him stop syncing with his mail. It's mainly the calendar that is important now. I am sure there will be a solution somewhere.

Thanks for the input.

My ISP allows me to have multiple email accounts. I have one my wife and I share that is what Outlook on our home PC uses. I created another email account that only my Axim uses (so that when I am away from home I can get emails rather than them downloading to our home PC and being removed from the server with no one around to read them while the wife is out shopping!).

Because I am set up this way, I do not synch emails when my Axim is cradled. It has pretty much become that I do all of my emails on the Axim, and the wife does hers on the PC. If I need to send a lengthy email I use the webmail interface my ISP has rather than using the Axim's limited input methods.

I send and receive email through my WLAN at home, and Wi-Fi hotspots or through my cell phone (Verizon) when I am out.

It sounds like you don't have any problems with something deleting your emails. Ours are getting deleted even though the Axim isn't syncing the email. It seems as though just attaching the Axim in it's cradle to the computer causes the emails to be deleted.

This is driving me crazy. We leave the Axim unconnected, then after connecting, within an hour the messages on the server are deleted. I even changed the password to our account today to make sure no one was getting our emails that shouldn't be.

All we can do is not use the Axim, or not leave it connected to the network.

the axim manual states that as long as you do not move the emails to a different folder in your axim outlook, then there will not be a server change. i run 3 setups. My axim, my desktop, my laptop & i sync my axim w/ my desktop. i have not had a problem with the dell axim stealing the mail off the server. Just follow the directions and manually delete permantely what you want deleted instead of moving it to a folder.

hopes this helps.

I am thinking we have a different problem. This morning the Axim wasn't even in the office and the emails were deleted off of the server. I had opened the Active Sync program and was looking thru the settings and when I was thru noticed all the emails were deleted. It could just be they are being deleted randomly by our ISP. It's sure driving me crazy.

I'll see what happens this weekend while no one is in the office. It seems they aren't deleted then, like last night. I don't know what else to look for.

You might try setting up a connection to your email account using IMAP instead of POP3. When I asked my ISP about this sort of behavior on my Ax, this is what they told me to do. Essentially, while you can set a POP3 connection to not delete from server during download, with IMAP there is no way to delete from server remotely.

If you try checking mail via IMAP on the Axim and it still disappears from the server, your ISP probable has server issues that you need to discuss with them.

Thanks, I'll look into setting up using IMAP. I don't know much about it, but I'm sure there's info around.
