With Pocket Outlook open go to Accounts> Accounts. On the first tab is where your accounts are listed and can be deleted. You can then click the New button from that same tab to create another pop3 account.

Hold on a second
Which actual screen are you at when you input a name and get the reject? When creating a POP3 account, the first screen you get is the E-mail Address setup. This, clearly, would be the the e-mail address your service provider established. Clicking on NEXT brings you to the User Information screen, whre you put your real name, the USER name that your service provider requires in order for you to obtain your e-mail, and the Password. Clicking on NEXT then brings you to the Account Information screen. This has a box for select what type off account it is (i.e., POP3) and inputting the name you want to give this e-mail "connection". Now, when I attempt to create a bogus test e-mail account and get to this point, I can force the error you describe by inputting the exact same e-mail connection name that I used for my real POP3 account. Is this the place your referring to? If it is, then you can name this anything you want, to describe what this e-mail account is (i.e.,"My Primary POP3"). It doesn't impact how the account works.

However, if you're bound and determined to call your email account connection the exact same thing, get a registry editor and try to locate all instances of that name in your registry. I think it's a fair guess that in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\LdapInfo you may still have an entry with that name in it. You might try deleting that entry if it exists and see if you can enter the name again.

still can not add account using the old name
I have the same problem. It happens a couple of times. The first time, I do a restore the backup to fix it. This time, I do not want to do restore, and want to use the same name, do not know how to fix it. I search the whole registry and found the name, delete it, also deleted the LDAPInfo key, soft reset, try to create an account with the old name, it still give out the error.
Where is the account name stored?

fixed the problem
I finally fixed this problem. The account info is not in registry, instead it is in internal database. By using Pocket DBExplorer (search handango.com), I was able to find the old account name in pMailFolder database, then just delete those records.

same issue in Windows Mobile 2005 - any solution?
I'm having the same problem in Windows Mobile 2005. I used the included backup program to back up "all data" to SD card, but when I restored, the e-mail accounts were gone. The device won't let me re-create them as new accounts because the names are "already assigned to another account" and each account requires a "unique name."

I tried to download Pocket DBExplorer but apparently it doesn't work with Windows Mobile 2005.

Also, I tried a hard reset with the SD card out of the machine, then re-created the accounts, and re-inserted the card, and restored. Incredibly, restoring erased the accounts that I had just created, without restoring the original accounts.

Is there another fix? Also, is this a Dell issue or a Microsoft issue?

BTW, in response to RobertCF's comment that the name does not affect functionality, the same could be said of any of our names. Nevertheless, we don't usually change our names, even if they're not unique.

Hello I have this same problem with POP3 acct. There was a defect in my x51 screen and I am trying to transfer my data to the replacement. I backed up the PIM data and did a restore on the replacement Axim x51v (A06 firmware 2005 win). The today page shows "POP3 3 Unread". Normally you could click on this and it would open email but nothing happens when clicking. I try to set up the correct POP3 acct and like the other posting above it says an account with that name (POP3) already exists. If I create the same acct with another name (say POP3_B) then on the today page it shows "POP3 3 Unread and POP3_B 3 Unread". The 2nd acct POP3_B can be opened by clicking on this (3 unread on the today page) but not with the other acct "POP3". The acct with the name POP3 is not shown anywhere to delete.

To try to fix this I did a hard reset on the replacement Axim x51, created the POP3 acct (with that name). On the defective Axim I backed up the PIM but unchecked INBox. I restored this PIM to the replacement machine and again it shows "POP3 3 unread" on the today page.

It is ridiculous that the PIM restore somehow creates this POP3 acct but it is not functional and cannot be deleted through any nomal means directly from the PDA. I contacted Dell through online chat and they had nothing to offer other than to contact MS.

Perhaps if I backed up the whole system I would not have this problem but I put a trial copy of CityTime (a very nice program - I had it on my Handspring Visor) and when it expired though I removed the program it created notification errors when I was using my GPS and under some other circumstances. So I really don't wish to do this.

Any ideas would be welcome. I will need to send the defective unit back soon and I need to make sure I can get the data to the replacement without this problem.

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem.

Reading these threads, i see there is no solution.

But i do believe that the POP setting get saved in the back up process.

I'm going to back up w/o saving my inbox info. and see if it works.

But i don't want to really do that.

So if there is any new found knowlege regarding this please do advise.

Thank so much.
I plan on doing this hardreset probably this weekend and update with my finding. I can't afford to do a hardreset and load all my programs etc. now.

****Update****

I just did as i planned to do. I had restored PIM not including inbox.

I hardreset the device, restored pim (but not the inbox info) and i was able to set up the gmail etc.

So unfortunately there is a hardrest involved at the moment.

i tried all others, but this is what i had to resort to and i'm happy it worked. Now i have to get all apps uploaded.
