Yep, Magic Button is your answer - it realy closes all the apps but you can also config it to minimize , plus it ads an icon of the background running app on the t bar. Very good prog, you dont have to install all those huge today screen managers, ahh and as it's been said it's free ....

I use Battery Pack Pro which comes with Program Bar. It adds a OK button and a pull down arrow on the most right corner of the screen and from there you can see running programs, close them or move between them.

The X without those other programs minimizes programs right now, not to the taskbar but to the start menu. THe other options do have more functions though and are all good choices
