Differences in Operating Systems

I thought I was beginning to understand some of how the PDA OS were named but have gotten more confused. What are the meanings of all the different terms for the operating systems:
- WindowsCE 4.00
- WindowsCE 4.20
- PocketPC 2003
- PocketPC 2003 SE
- Windows Mobile 2003
- Windows Mobile 2003 SE

Even a general description would be satisfactory.

PPC2003 and WM2003 are the same. PPC2003SE and WM2003SE are the same. The Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 2003 SE terms are correct (as opposed to PPC2003 etc.)

The Windows Mobile OS is built on top of Windows CE. CE provides the base of the OS and the Windows Mobile that you see is really a shell that sits on top of CE.

Thanks for that, Howard2k. I was always confused about the CE/Windows Mobile issue.

Thanks Howard2k. One final question, is there a WM2003 and a WM2003SE and if so what does the SE stand for. Thanks for a wonderful education.

Yes, there is a difference. SE stand for Second Edition.

SE means Second Edition (I think !).

Nobody has mentioned PPC 2002 - the OS originally installed on my X5 and which I still use.

As i said , it's the same OS, with different features (or bugz).

WInCE should have been created from the ground up, M$ though

by stripping win98 they have a readily available os for

mobiles/pda/smartphone.

So in the end you can call it anything you wan't , but the core is a win98.

google it

or check this
