I was playing around with Where Is My Ram the other day, and noticed the "profiles" subdirectory was the largest one in my Windows directory. More specifically, \windows\profiles\guest\ has three subdirectories: Temporary Internet Files, History & Cookies. Together these subdirectories are taking up 1.6 meg of space.
I went into PIE and clicked "Clear History", "Delete Files" and "Clear Cookies", but it didn't free up any space. Each of the three directories has a file in it somewhere called index.dat that is taking up the space, and trying to clear them in PIE doesn't seem to have any effect. When I clicked the buttons I mentioned above nothing happens and no space is regained.
I'm using WM2003 on an X5 Advanced. Can I safely blow these away? I tried to copy them to my SD card so I could see if getting rid of them had any impact, but when I tried they were "in use" and couldn't be moved. I'm guessing they aren't going to just let me delete them.
A soft reset should help. Check memory before and after you''ll be amazed I think.

i delete those files all the time. they are from using ftxpbrowser on my pda. it won't let you remove the .ini and .dat files but they are pretty small.

Ah...I had been using ftxp browser, but I uninstalled it.
The problem is the .dat files are taking up over 1.5meg of space and I can't delete them. There's got to be a way to get rid of them without doing a hard reset.
Well, I've made some progress here, but I still need some help.
I downloaded the demo of MemMaid and moved the PIE cache to my SD card. This allowed me to delete the biggest pig file:
\Windows\Profiles\Guest\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat
Which was hogging 896KBs of storage memory.
Interestingly enough that same file on the SD card is now only 16.6KB. The problem is MemMaid doesn't move the PIE history, which still has this piggy file in it:
\Windows\Profiles\Guest\History\History.IE5\index. dat
This file is chewing up 650KB of space. Just to be clear:
1. I realize I can't just delete this file.
2. All I want to do is reclaim some of the space this file is taking up.
3. Deleting history in PIE has no effect - I've done it about 100 times...I've also done a soft reset and then tried clearing it in PIE and this doesn't work either.
4. MemMaid is unable to clear this file also.
Is there a way to move PIE history to the SD card like I did for the Temporary Internet Files? This would allow me to whack this file after I point PIE to the SD card.

Uhmm Dave, That's not correct Dave. The index.dat file is created and maintained by PIE as well

Uhmm Dave, That's not correct Dave. The index.dat file is created and maintained by PIE as well. But of course you are correct in that the other files can be safely deleted. Deleting index.dat has been known to cause the dreaded "Page cannot be found" message to the dismay of many who have deleted it.

What version of ftxpbrowser are you using?
I have ppc2002 and ftxpbrowser version-E 0.1q (from Jan 5, 2004).
This is the most stable version I could find.
I am not sure of the differences the OS adds, but I don't have any other files or deletion problems with my Temp Internet files.
Also, I don't have mine put into the Profiles folder, it might be a ppc2002 versus ppc2003 difference.
