Wake on Lan using WM2003SE

Ok, been stumped on this one a few days.

If I have my computer at home on, and I'm at work or any other Hotspot, I can VPN into my 3Com router, and then use Terminal Services to gain control of my home computer. No issues there.

However, I'd rather not leave my computer on 24/7, so the obvious answer is Wake on Lan. I've downloaded like 4-5 different Wake on Lan programs, and for the most part they work really well INSIDE the network. For instance, if I'm home, and my computer is off, I can send it the WoL magic packet and it'll wake up. However, if I try to issue a WoL packet while I'm VPN'd into the network, it will not work.

Now, at first I though there must be something blocking the actual WoL packet. That can't be true, because in the same location (work) over WiFi, I fire up the WoL utility from Depicus, and VPN into my home network (same VPN user/pass as my X50v uses). I can issue the WoL packet from my laptop and my computer will wake up. So obviously it can be done.

The question is, why can't my X50v do it?

I've checked MAC addresses umpteen times, IP addresses, and it's correct (which would explain why it works fine when I'm home and try it). Obviously the receiving computer is set up properly because it has no problem waking up with packets sent inside the network, or from a packet sent over the VPN from my laptop.

Anyone know any anomolies as to why WM2003SE isn't allowing this?

Sounds like you covered everything and then some. Im not quite about this but is it possible that the port just isnt forwarded properly? Since you can do it over your lan, then it is sending the magic packet but since you cant do it from the outside perhaps the packet just isnt going to the right computer.

But that's the wierd part. I can VPN into my router using my laptop and send the packet. That wakes the computer as it should.

When I VPN into my router using my Axim, no WoL program I have seems to work.

The Axim does work inside the network, so I know it's sending the packets. I know the router isn't blocking things because the laptop can Wake the computer over the VPN.

That's what has me stumped. Everything works, except the only difference is software. For one reason or another, it seems like the Axim isn't actually transmitting.

Maybe I need some sort of sniffer program running and watch the outbound traffic and see if the WoL signal is actually leaving the Axim, heading down the VPN tunnel. Unfortunately, VPN is supposed to be encrypted, so I don't know if I'll be able to.
